Mechanics of Machines Dr. Mohammad Kilani Class 1 Introduction
Mechanics Mechanics is the branch of physical science concerned with the behavior of physical bodies when subjected to forces or displacements, and the subsequent effects of the bodies on their environment. [www.wikipedia.com]
Machines A machine is a tool that uses energy to achieve a particular goal. Machines are usually powered by mechanical, chemical, thermal, or electrical means, and are frequently motorized. A mechanical machine consists of one or more parts, and is used to transforms the direction or magnitude of a force.
Mechanisms A mechanism is a device designed to transform input forces and movement into a desired set of output forces and movement. Mechanisms generally consist of moving components such as gears and gear trains, belt and chain drives, cam and follower mechanisms, and linkages as well as friction devices such as brakes and clutches, and structural components such as the frame, fasteners, bearings, springs, lubricants and seals, as well as a variety of specialized elements such as splines, pins and keys.
