8 The Holy Books of Islam Islam has two “inspired” written texts. –The Qur’an Recited by Mohammed

9 The Holy Books of Islam Islam has two “inspired” written texts. –The Qur’an Recited by Mohammed –The Hadith Over a dozen volumes of written commentaries on the Qur’an. Includes much historical information not found in the Qur’an. Deemed as authoritative as the Qur’an by Muslim scholars.

10 What is a Hadith? A tradition or collection of traditions of Mohammed. –Includes his sayings and deeds. –Sometimes used as a synonym of sunna. As a discipline, consists of 2 branches. –Validation through chain of authority (isnad). –Validation through content (matn). Two collections: Sunni and Shiite

11 The Two Collections of Hadiths Sunni scholars recognize… –Bukhari collections –Abu Dawud, Tirmidhi, an-Nassi, and Ibn Maja collections Shiite scholars recognize… –Collections through Ali’s family –Al-Kulini, al-Babuya, al-Qummi, al-Tusi collections.

12 The Importance of the Hadith The Hadith is to be considered as authoritative as the Qur’an. Dr. Mohammed Hamidullah says, “The custodian and repository of the original teachings of Islam… [are found] above all in the Qur’an and the Hadith.” 1 “The Qur’an and the Hadith… are the basis of all [Islamic] law.” 2 1 Introduction to Islam, page 250. 2 Ibid., page 163.

13 The Importance of the Hadith Dr. Mohammed Hamidullah also says Muslims revere the Hadith as well as the Qur’an because: “The Hadith is as divinely inspired as the Qur’an itself. The teachings of Islam are based primarily on the Qur’an and the Hadith, and, as well shall presently see, both are based on divine inspiration.” 1 1 Introduction to Islam, page 23.

14 The Importance of the Hadith Muslim writers such as Hammudullah Abdalatati says the Hadith is considered the Second Source of Islam: “All the articles of faith… are based and derived from the teachings of the Qur’an and the Traditions (Hadith) of Mohammed.” 1 Thus it is no surprise that the Hadith is inspired and authoritative to “orthodox” Muslims. 1 Islam in Focus, (Singapore: The Muslim Converts’ Association of Singapore, 1991), page 21.

15 The Importance of the Hadith The Hadiths contain much information about pre- Islamic Arabic which is not found in the Qur’an. –For example, Vol. 3, #65 and Vol. 5, #53, tell us there were 360 idols as the Ka’bah when Mohammed conquered it. The Hadith contains intricate details and in what way various Islamic rituals and laws are to be carried out.

16 What Drives the Hadith? The driving force behind the Hadith is the question... “What must I do to be forgiven by Allah and to be admitted to paradise?” In the Hadith, Mohammed does not give vague generalities to the reader. He tells the reader exactly what to do, how to do it, and in what order to do it.

17 A Working Assumption Without Allah’s forgiveness, no one may enter Paradise. Hell fire awaits those who do not gain Allah’s favor. To gain Allah’s acceptance is not easy. One must earn Allah’s forgiveness. One mistake can cancel out all that you have done.

18 “Salvation” in Islam There is no concept of salvation by grace in the Hadith. The Hadith sets forth the rules and rituals which must be followed to earn salvation. Muslims who ignore these rules and rituals imperil their immortal souls. Let us look now at the “inspired” teachings of Mohammed.

19 The Islam Comic Book

20 Introduction

21 Allah’s Monkey Men

22 Allah’s Monkey Men

23 Allah’s Monkey Men

24 Allah’s Monkey Men The Qur’an Surah 7:163-166 Ask them about the town which stood by the sea shore. Behold! They sinned in regard to the Sabbath. On their Sabbath day, the fish swam up to them and stuck their heads out of the water (to tempt them to catch them). But the fish did not do this on the day that was not the Sabbath. In this way We tempted them because they were devoted to sinning. When some of them said, “Why do you bother preaching to people whom Allah will destroy or inflict with a terrible punishment?” The preachers responded, “To fulfill our obligations to their Lord and they might yet fear Him.” When they ignored the warnings given to them, We saved those who avoided evil, but We punished the evil-doers with a grievous punishment because they were devoted to sinning. When in their insolence they transgressed the warnings, We said to them, “Become monkeys! Despised and rejected.”

25 Jewish Rats and Pigs

26 Jewish Rats and Pigs

27 Jewish Rats and Pigs

28 Jewish Rats and Pigs The Hadith Bukhari, vol. IV, chapter 524, p. 333: The Prophet said, “A group of Israelites were lost. Nobody knows what they did. But I do not see them except that they were cursed and transformed into rats, for if you put the milk of a she-camel in front of a rat, it will not drink it, but if the milk of a sheep is put in front of it, it will drink it.” (1) It was illegal for the Israelites to eat the meat or drink the milk of camels while they were allowed to eat the meat and rink the milk of sheep. The prophet inferred from the rats’ habit that some of the Israelites had been transformed into rats. (2) Later on the prophet was informed through inspiration about the fate of those Israelites: They were transformed into pigs and monkeys.

29 Mohammed’s Inspiration

30 Mohammed’s Inspiration

31 Mohammed’s Inspiration

32 Mohammed’s Inspiration The Hadith Mohammed would hear ringing in his ears; his heart would beat rapidly; his face turn red; his breathing labored; he would fall to the ground or lie down; he would shake; his eyes would open wide; his lips tremble; spit drool from the corners of his mouth; he would sweat profusely; he saw and heard things no one else ever saw or heard; he would sometimes make a snoring noise like that of a camel; and he would be covered with a sheet. vol. I, nos. 1, 2, 3, 4 vol. II, chap. 16 (pg. 354), no. 544 vol. III, nos. 17, 829 vol. IV, nos. 95, 438, 458, 461 vol. V, nos. 170, 462, 618, 659 vol. VI, nos. 447, 448, 468, 478, 481, 508

33 A Test of Prophethood

34 A Test of Prophethood

35 A Test of Prophethood The Hadith Bukhari vol. IV. No. 546: When Abdullah bin Salam heard of the arrival of the Prophet at Medina, he came to him and said, “I am going to ask you about three things which nobody knows except a prophet: 1. What is the first sign of the Hour (i.e., the end of the world)? 2. What will be the first meal taken by the people of Paradise? 3. Why does a child resemble its father and why does it resemble its maternal uncle?” Allah’s Apostle said, “Gabriel just now told me of their answers.” Abdullah said, “He (i.e., Gabriel), from amongst all the angels, is the enemy of the Jews.”

36 A Test of Prophethood Allah’s Apostle said, “The first sign of the Hour will be a fire that will bring together the people from the East to the West; the first meal of the people of Paradise will be an extra lobe of fish-liver. As for the resemblance of the child to its parents: if a man has sexual intercourse with his wife and gets his discharge first, the child will resemble the father, and if the woman gets her discharge first, the child will resemble her.”

37 The Seal of Prophethood

38 The Seal of Prophethood The Qur’an Surah 33:40 Mohammed is not the father of any of your men, but (he is) the Apostle of Allah and the Seal of the Prophets (rests upon him). The Hadith Bukhari vol. I, no. 189; vol. IV, no. 741: Narrated As-Sa’ib Yazid: “I stood behind him (i.e., Allah’s Apostle) and saw the Seal of Prophethood between his shoulders, and it was like the ‘zir-al-Hijla’ (the size of a button on a small tent or a partridge egg).” Bukhari vol. IV, no. 741: Narrated As Sab’ib Bin Yazid “Standing behind him (i.e. Allah’s Apostle) I saw the Seal (of the Prophets) between his shoulders.”

39 The Seal of Prophethood Muslim vol. IV, no. 5790-5793 THE FACT PERTAINING TO THE SEAL OF HIS PROPHETHOOD, ITS CHARACTERISTIC FEATURE AND ITS LOCATION ON HIS BODY. Jabir B. Samura reported: “I saw the Seal on his back as if it were a pigeon’s egg.” This Hadith has been narrated on the authority of Simak with the same chain of transmitters. As-Sa’ib B. Yzid reported: My mother’s sister took me to Allah’s Messenger and… I stood behind him and I saw the Seal between his shoulders. Abdullah B. Sarjis reported: “I saw Allah’s Apostle and ate with him bread and meet…. I then went after him and saw the Seal of Prophethood between his shoulders on the left side of this shoulder having spots on it like moles.”

Surah VII:77 Then they ham-strung the she-camel and insolently defied the order of their Lord… so the earthquake took them unawares and they lay prostrate in their homes in the morning. Surah LIV:23 The Thamud rejected their Warners. Surah LIV:27 For we sent the she-camel as a trial for them.

44 The She-Camel Prophet The Qur’an Surah LIV:29 But they called to their companion and he took a sword in his hand and ham-strung her. Surah LIV:30-31 Ah! How terrible was my penalty and my warning! For We sent against them a single mighty blast and they became like the dry stubble used by one who pens cattle. Surah XCI:11 The Thamud people rejected their prophets through their inordinate wrong-doing. Surah XCI:13-14 But the apostle of Allah said to them, “It is a she- camel of Allah! Do not hinder her from drinking.” But they rejected him and ham-strung her. So their Lord, on account of this crime, destroyed the traces of them and made them all suffer equally.

45 The Champions of the Cave

46 The Champions of the Cave

47 The Champions of the Cave The Qur’an Surah VII:9-25 Do you understand that the Companions of the Cave and of the Inscription were wonders among our signs? Behold, the youths entered the Cave and said, “Our Lord, bestow upon us your mercy and deal with us in the right way.” We drew a veil over their ears for a number of years in the Cave. Then we awakened them in order to test which of the two parties was best at calculating the number of years they had stayed in the Cave. We relate to you their story in truth… So they stayed in their Cave three hundred years, and some add nine more years to that.

Then he raised him up and said, “How long have you stayed here?” He said, “A day or a part of a day.” He said, “No, you have been here for 100 years! But look at your food and your drink. 116 116 You Were Born a Sinner All people are born sinners. We are all unrighteous people. –Romans 3:10-12 As it is written, “ Not even one person is righteous. No one understands. No one searches for God. All have turned away. Together they have become worthless. ”

117 Your Best Efforts Fail All people sin. Our best efforts will never measure up. –Romans 3:23 … since all have sinned and continue to fall short of God ’ s glory.

118 The Price of Sin is Death The price of sin is death. –Romans 5:12 Therefore, just as sin entered the world through one man, and death through sin, so death spread to everyone, because all have sinned.

119 Jesus Paid Your Debt Jesus paid your debt by dying in your place. –Romans 6:23 For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in union with Christ Jesus our Lord.

120 Christ Died for You Christ died in your place, paying your price, and suffering so that you would not have to suffer eternally. –Romans 5:8 But God demonstrates his love for us by the fact that Christ died for us while we were still sinners.

121 His Invitation Is to You… Now His invitation is open to anyone … even you. –Romans 10:13 For “ everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved. ”

122 Confess, Declare, Believe You must confess your sin, declare His Lordship, and believe in your heart that God raised Christ from the dead. –Romans 10:9-10 … if you declare with your mouth that Jesus is Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For a person believes with his heart and is justified, and a person declares with his mouth and is saved.

123 Your Prayer for Salvation “ Lord, Jesus, I know that I am a sinner and I need you. I know that you paid the price for my sins by dying on the cross. I ask that you forgive my sins; and I receive you as my Savior and Lord. I thank you for forgiving my sins and giving me eternal life. Take control of the throne of my life. Make me the kind of person you want me to be. Amen. ”

124 Some Truths to Remember Remember these simple truths from God ’ s Word: –1 John 1:9 If we make it our habit to confess our sins, he is faithful and righteous to forgive us those sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness. – Romans 8:16 The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God ’ s children.

125 Some Truths to Remember –Ephesians 2:8 For by such grace you have been saved through faith. This does not come from you; it is the gift of God and not the result of works, lest anyone boast. – Romans 8:18 For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worth comparing to the glory that will be revealed to us.

126 Some Truths to Remember –1 John 5:13 I have written these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God so that you may know that you have eternal life. –2 Corinthians 5:17-18a Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. Old things have disappeared, and — look! — all things have become new! All of this comes from God, who has reconciled us to himself through Christ …
