6 The B.S. in Environmental Technology and Management (BS ETM) program aims to develop in the students the knowledge of environmental laws and regulations and the societal implications of technology for the advancement of their skills in environmental management

7 Mission of the Department “…to form technically competent, socially aware and culturally rooted environmental practitioners who will lead in government, industry and civil society.” The curriculum is designed such that it covers the entire range of fields and specializations for a more holistic understanding of environmental issues arising from industrial activities. 8 The Curriculum The Department of Environmental Science –includes topics from the basic scientific and technical concepts in environmental technology & management to the more in-depth study of specific pollution abatement strategies –also includes a variety of other courses such as environmental modeling, environmental health and safety and environmental law and policy –takes a more proactive approach through courses that include topics such as Green Chemistry, Cleaner Production and Life Cycle Analysis, among others

17 The Department of Environmental Science BS Environmental Technology and Management COURSE DESCRIPTIONS ETM 15: Introduction to Environmental Technology and Management (3 units, lecture) This course provides an overview of the technologies and management strategies needed in understanding the environmental issues as well as the solutions in the various components of the environment (air, water, soil & biota). In particular, the course is designed to provide the student with the knowledge and skills necessary in addressing the challenges faced by industry today. In addition to topics on technology and management, students will be introduced to other areas such as environmental standards and policy, environmental health among others. Prerequisites: ES10/12 ETM 20: Introduction to Environmental Management Systems (3 units, lecture) This course provides the basics of environmental management systems. Topics such as life cycle analysis, cleaner production and other various environmental management tools and applications are included. Prerequisites: ES10/12 ETM 25: Introduction to Integrated Water Resource Management (3 units, lecture) The course introduces the concepts of Integrated Water Resource Management and presents a broad overview on the various sectors and disciplines involved. It adopts an integrated, multi-sectoral and interdisciplinary approach to the development and management of water, land and related resources in order to offer the most benefits to their users without compromising the sustainability of vital ecosystems. Prerequisites: Ch 7/8, ES 10/12

18 ETM 30: Introduction to Hydrogeology (3 units, lecture) The course is an introduction to the science of hydrology and to the role of water as a resource, a hazard, and an integral component of the Earth's climatic, biological, and geological systems. The course looks into the nature and occurrences of ground and surface water systems; exploration and extraction methods; assessment of water quality and rehabilitation of contaminated water systems. It studies the behavior and properties of water in the geologic environment with emphasis on subsurface water, including studies of flow patterns, chemistry, behavior in various geological landforms and materials, and pollution problems. The quantitative aspects of groundwater hydrogeology in the development of the equations governing the flow of water in aquifers, the identification of appropriate initial and boundary conditions and the methods of groundwater monitoring and field techniques are all included in the course. Prerequisites: ES10/12 or upon approval of faculty in charge ETM 70: Air and Water Pollution Control and Abatement (3 units, lecture) The course covers the basic aspects of natural atmospheric and hydrospheric phenomena and how these are disrupted by the presence of pollutants. It will also include discussion on the nature of the various types of air and water pollution and provide an understanding of their sources. The course also exposes the student to present technologies designed for monitoring air and water quality as well as abating air and water pollution caused by industrial processes. Prerequisites: Ma 20.3b, Ch 35/36, Ps11/12, Bi100/100.1, EMT 160 or upon approval of faculty in charge

19 ETM 70.1: Air and Water Pollution Control and Abatement (1 unit, laboratory) This laboratory course is a companion to EMT 70. It will include both laboratory experiments as well as field visits to relevant sites. Prerequisites: Ma 20.3b, Ch 35/36, Ps11/12, Bi100/100.1, EMT 160 or upon approval of faculty in charge ETM 90: Industrial Waste Control Technologies (3 units, lecture) This course will provide an overview of the environmental impacts of industrial pollution. It will cover a study of industrial processes and generation of waste streams in selected industries. The focus will be on how available technologies could be used to control its environmental impacts through waste minimization and waste treatment. Prerequisites: Students must have completed their basic courses in science and mathematics. ETM 90.1: Industrial Waste Control Technologies (1 unit, laboratory) The laboratory component will provide a venue to develop basic scientific and technical skills for pollution assessment with respect to the source, composition and characteristics of the wastes for the analysis, treatment and control of industrial wastewaters, groundwater/soil contaminants and solid/hazardous wastes. Prerequisites: Students must have completed their basic courses in science and mathematics.

20 ETM 100: Environmental Geology (3 units, lecture) The course deals with the relationship between geology and human activities. It puts emphasis on geologic process and hazards influencing human activities and on human activities influencing soil, water, atmosphere and energy resources. The course looks into the nature and occurrences of geohazards such as earthquake, volcanic eruption, mass wasting, and flooding; and man-induced modifications on local and global environments. It incorporates details on the dynamics of the geo-environment, pollution of water and land and the types of contaminants (speciation and toxicity). Effects on the environment due to mining, quarrying, utilization of minerals, oil and acid mine drainage will also be discussed. Prerequisites: ES10/12 or upon approval of faculty in charge ETM 100.1: Environmental Geology (1 unit, laboratory) This laboratory course is a companion to EMT 100. It will include both laboratory experiments as well as field observations in geological sites. Prerequisites: Es10/12 or upon approval of faculty in charge ETM 110: Environmental Ecology (3 units, lecture) This is a 3-unit course that provides lectures on the fundamental principles of ecology with emphasis on the impacts of pollution and other stresses on the structure and function of ecosystems. Prerequisite: Upon approval of faculty in charge

21 ETM 120: Energy, Technology and the Environment (3 units, lecture) This is a 3-unit course that starts with the principles and phenomena of the First and Second Laws of Thermodynamics. It will then apply these laws to the questions of energy generation, utilization and their effects. Prerequisites: Ma 18a, Ps 11/11.1, Ps 12/12.1, Ch 7/8, ES 110 or upon approval of faculty in charge ETM 120.1: Energy, Technology and the Environment (1 unit, laboratory) This laboratory course is a companion to ETM 120 that includes laboratory experiments and field visits to relevant sites. Prerequisites: Ma 18a, Ps 11/11.1, Ps 12/12.1, Ch 7/8, ES 110 or upon approval of faculty in charge ETM 121: Industry and the Environment (3 units. lecture) This 3-unit course focuses on the impact of industry on the environment and mitigation using various technologies. The course covers industrial metabolism with a survey of industrial processes and their environmental impact as well as case studies on technological solutions to problems. This course is designed for science majors, as well as non-science majors who have sufficient background in the basic sciences. Prerequisites: Students must have completed their basic courses in science and mathematics.

22 ETM 130: Modeling for Environmental Technology and Management (3 units, lecture) A lecture and computer hands-on course designed to introduce students to the use of natural as well as human-system models, both as an introduction to designing systems, environmental assessment, incorporating sustainability in technology and as a tool for environmental management. It involves a survey and run-through of some simulation programs and design software currently in use and available in the market. The course also looks at general techniques on how to evaluate such packages for accuracy and reliability. Prerequisites:Subject to approval of the teacher in charge ETM 130.1: Environmental Modeling for Technology and Management (1 unit, laboratory) This laboratory course is a companion to EMT 130. It will include exercises on using computer modeling programs which are used in planning, assessment, design, management and other applications. Prerequisite: Subject to approval of the teacher. ETM 131: Principles of Field Sampling and Analysis (2 Units, lecture) Assessment of various components of the earth such as lithosphere, hydrosphere and the atmosphere and their corresponding ecosystems are major components in this course. The abiotic and biotic components of various ecosystems will be studied using internationally accepted protocols. Standard methodologies in sampling and analysis will be covered. Prerequisites: Ch 35/36, Ps 12/12.1, Stat 105 or upon approval of faculty in charge

23 ETM 131.1: Principles of Field Sampling and Analysis (1 units, laboratory) This laboratory course is a companion to EMT 131. It will include both laboratory experiments as well as field observations in relevant sites. Prerequisites: Ch 35/36, Ps 12/12.1, Stat 105 or upon approval of faculty in charge ETM 140.2: Fundamentals of Water and Water Pollution (3 units, lecture) This 3-unit course discusses the fundamental physico-chemical properties of water as well as broad overview of the different types of naturally occurring source of water. The course will also cover the various pollution problems including the nature and types of water pollutants, their origin, transport, reactions, effects, and fates of chemical species in the water. The monitoring of water quality and methods of preserving, clean water resources will also be discussed. Prerequisites: Ma 18a, Ps 11/11.1, Ps 12/12.1, Ch 7/8, Ch11/12, Ch 35/36 ETM 140.2a: Fundamentals of Water and Water Pollution (1 unit, laboratory) This laboratory course is a companion to ETM that includes laboratory experiments, as well as field visits to relevant sites.

24 ETM 150: Special Topics in Environmental Technology and Management (3 units, lecture) This course will provide a venue for discussing advanced topics and current issues in the field of Environmental Technology and Management. Subjects such as biotechnology, sustainable energy sources, nanotechnology, green chemistry, GIS and the like will be covered. Prerequisites: Students must have completed their basic courses in science and mathematics. ETM 170: Seminar in Environmental Policy and Law (3 units, lecture) This 3-unit course gives an overview of the process of environmental decision-making in the Philippines, focusing on the interplay of the natural and social sciences with law in establishing norms and resolving environmental disputes. Students will be introduced to a spectrum of approaches to environmental issues, including command-and-control systems, market approaches, sustainable development, pollution prevention, and community-based resource management. The course will also give an overview of global environmental issues and international environmental law, in particular, those which are relevant to the Philippine setting. Current environmental issues, such as deforestation, air and water pollution, waste, marine pollution, biodiversity, and climate change, shall be included in the course. Prerequisites: Ch 7/8, Ch 11

25 ETM 175: Environmental Management and Environmental Impact Assessment (3 units, lecture) This 3-unit subject covers basic concepts, principles and tools in Environmental Planning and Management. The course also includes a discussion of past and current environmental laws as well as the dynamics between economic forces and the environment. The basic categories are also discussed, namely, sustainable development planning, management of natural ecosystems, and pollution management where students gain perspectives from various sectoral efforts like government, the business and industry sector, non-government organizations, and local communities. No Prerequisites. ETM 176 : Environmental Impact Assessment (Lecture, 3 units ) This 3-unit course will equip the students with the basic knowledge and skills in EIA. The scope includes the theoretical framework, methodology, and applications for EIA in the Philippines. At the end of the course, students are expected to understand the rationale behind the EIA, predict and assess impacts of development projects on the biophysical and sociocultural environments, and relate their field of specialization to other fields of studies applicable to EIA. Prerequisite: Students should be in their senior year level; consent of the instructor (based on assessment of courses already taken up).

26 ETM 180: Environmental Technology and Management Internship (3 units, OJT) One of the solutions to mitigate environmental problems is through technological innovations and environment friendly policies. The student is exposed to industry practices such as waste water technologies or abatement of air pollution through on the on the job trainings in industry. This internship ties up the theories learned in the university, particularly the major courses in environmental technologies and management with that of industry practices. Prerequisite: Senior standing ETM 190: Special Project (2 units, lecture) The course is designed for the student to apply the different mathematical and scientific principles previously learned to an industrial or management problem that can be remedied by environmentally innovative solutions. In addition, the project/research will generate additional information on the Philippine environment and industry sector. Prerequisite: Senior standing ETM 191: Senior Seminar (1 unit, seminar) The seminar course is designed to develop the student in presenting to the public the output of the special project. The course trains the student to do a systematic method of doing review of literature and putting these together to enhance the special project. By the end of the semester, the student is required to present the output and submit a paper formatted for publication. Prerequisite: Senior standing
