2 Why Establish a Safety Council for the Food Processing Industry? The Food & Beverage Processing subsector has the highest worker injury rate in the Manufacturing Sector. 8 out of 100 workers are injured in the Food & Beverage Processing Industry in BC each year. The Food & Beverage industry supported the establishment of an organization in 2007to help improve their health & safety programs and reduce injuries in the food & beverage processing industry. This organization is the :

6 Strategy: Manage Board activities in accordance with established governance policies. Strategy: Maintain broad industry representation on the Council Strategy: Establish and monitor an accountability framework, including ensuring that WorkSafeBC contracts are achieved. Strategy: Manage Financial accountability to the industry and WorkSafeBC. Strategy: Review and annually update the strategic plan.

8 The Board of Directors is represented in 8 different industries within the food & beverage industry Nominations process actively pursues board & committee representation with diversity in Process, Geography, Size, Classification ( business & association), Skills, Experience

11 2008 Achievements External accounting firm manages all aspects of the Safety Council’s accounting needs, including generating monthly financial statements for Board of Directors Review. A Financial Audit Committee is appointed to ensure effective financial management. Engaged an independent accounting firm to act as auditor for the Safety Council.

15 2008 Achievements  Development of logo and branding concepts  Branding concepts involve use of food processing worker images taken at member organizations such as Lilydale Foods, Purdy’s Chocolates, Sun Rich Fresh Foods, Avalon Dairy, Rogers Sugar, Golden Valley Eggs, Vitalus Nutrition Shared logo links with partner associations

16 Development of: Information Brochures Single Page Safety Fact Sheets Joint initiative with WorkSafeBC, OHS Program Building for Small-Medium Processors Newsletter Completion of individual consultation sessions with over 85% of the largest food & beverage manufacturers in subsector Exhibition at several tradeshows, including participation at SSFPA Outreach Initiatives across the province Development of strategic alliances with BCFPA & SSFPA to work together on projects that foster awareness of the Safety Council and services offered to the industry.

17 Annual Safety Leadership Awards Small, Medium, Large Classes This innovative award recognizes industry leadership in health and safety. The award criteria focuses on safety as a core business practice and the ability for broad application across industry. Highlight an industry success story in each issue of Spotlight on Safety.

19 Strategy: Engage Industry to identify priorities for improving occupational health & safety Strategy: Monitor and respond to health & safety program requirements for high risk areas within the food processing industry. Strategy: Support industry with the resources to improve competency in health & safety. Strategy: Facilitate a regional approach to the implementation of health & safety programs.

20 2008 Achievements Developed a comprehensive Communications strategy that included a consultation process with employers in the food & beverage industry. Survey mailed to 1102 employers with a 14% return Over 700 small and medium employers were contacted for follow up Individual consultations with 85% of large companies

21 Prioritized the development of safety resources for the next 3 years. Included industry specific criteria in the COR program audit tool.

23 Supporting Industry Participation at food safety workshops throughout B.C. with the SSFPA. Advisory member of BCFPA Safety & Health Committee. Title sponsor and AGM at FoodPro West 2009, produced by the BCFPA June 5, 2009, Delta Burnaby Exploring opportunity to access funds to pilot a Occupational Safety & Health Networks program in 2009.

24 OSH Networks Program Based on the premise that a well integrated workplace health & safety program is good for business. Firms volunteer to work together with a collective purpose to learn from each other’s experience in implementing an injury and illness and prevention program. Program would be structured so that OH&S elements would be selected by the group at the beginning of the year and followed up by the Safety Council to ensure effective implementation by the end of the year. Survey results indicated over 60% support for this program.

25 Promote best practices and research to improve workplace health & safety. Strategic Objective #

26 Strategy: Research and promote health & safety best practices among employers in the food processing sector Strategy: Evaluate and communicate the effectiveness of Council sponsored health & safety training programs. Strategy: Evaluate and communicate changes in legislation affecting industry workplace health and safety. Strategy: Consolidate and report on research and statistics for industry related injuries and disease.

28 OSH Networks concept- developed proposal to access funding and launch in Including Supervisor panel in the final editing process of the Supervisory Orientation DVD to evaluate training resource and results for consideration in the final product.

29 Legislative changes are discussed at industry OSH Committee meetings. Safety Council are informed of legislative changes and in process of developing a formal evaluation and communication strategy.

30 Acquired WorkSafeBC industry statistical data and utilized results to develop 2009 business plan that targets poor performers. Plans in website and database development to effectively link industry statistics within Safety Council website.

31 Establish and promote a Certificate of Recognition Program Strategic Objective #

32 Strategy: Establish and maintain the BC Food Processors Health & Safety Council as a full participating Certifying Partner for COR. Strategy: Promote COR to increase industry participation and graduation.

37 Strategy: Ensure Safety Council capability to support industry to improve health & safety Strategy: Ensure consistency in delivery of Safety Council initiatives Strategy: Manage industry expectations for Council support by laying a foundation for the Council’s role and encouraging collaboration with industry. Strategy : Ensure organizational sustainability Strategy: Partner with education institutions to ensure students have the tools and competencies in health & safety

38 2008 Achievements Developed a strong foundation and infrastructure and policy to ensure effective management and utilization of resources. Accountability framework at all levels-including performance measurement. Annual strategic plan review. Developing effective internal and external communication systems. Establishing relationships and alliances with industry associations and safety associations (FARSHA).

39 A comprehensive Health & Safety survey to encourage industry participation and assist the Safety Council in identifying resource needs. Launching the OSH Network pilot Pending successful pilot, regional implementation will follow

40 Preliminary discussions have occurred between the Safety Council and training institutions such as C.A.R.E. institute to explore the opportunity to establish partnerships and deliver training programs to the food processing industry.

41 Looking Forward Through 2009 Maintain functional and efficient governance of the Safety CouncilThe Health & Safety Council will be foremost in the minds of industry.Engage and facilitate industry to help drive down the injury rate. Continue development of tools and resources to support industry in reducing the injury rate. Ensure the COR program is fully functional in Develop alternative funding and delivery mechanism to support the Council in achieving the Vision.
