“For whatever is born of God overcomes the world. And this is the victory that has overcome the world— our faith. Who is he who overcomes the world, but he who believes that Jesus is the Son of God?” (1 John 5:4-5)
Defining Terms: The World – N.T. Usage Matt. 13:22, “the cares of this world choke the word” Acts 17:6, “have turned the world upside down” Rom. 12:2, “do not be conformed to this world” Jas. 4:4, “friendship with the world is enmity with God” 2 Pet. 2:20, “escaped the pollutions of the world” 1 John 2:15-17; 3:1, 13; 4:4, 5 – “The world” = the inhabitants, affairs & ungodliness characteristic of society “The sum of all the forces antagonistic to the spiritual life”
Defining Terms: Overcome – N.T. Usage Romans 12:21 2 Peter 2:19-20 + 1 John 2:13-14; 4:4 Rev. 2:7, 11, 17, 26; Rev. 3:5, 12, 21; 21:7 – “Overcome” (Gk, nikao) = “to conquer, prevail, to carry off the victory, overcome” (present tense) From noun root nike = “victory” Jesus said, “I have overcome the world” (Jn. 16:33) Jesus won the victory over the world, and God in us (1 John 4:4) gives us victory.
Defining Terms: Faith – N.T. Usage – Heb. 11:1, “Faith is…” The assurance (being sure) of things hoped for The conviction (being certain) of things not seen – “Faith” (Gk, pistis) = “firm persuasion, strong conviction based upon hearing” The primary idea is trust A trust that is prompted to respond accordingly
Defining Terms: Faith – Faith that Jesus is the Son of God Having a strong conviction/trust in Jesus – Who Jesus is – What Jesus did – What Jesus said Peter professed this faith in Jesus – Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God – Matt. 16:15-16 – Jesus has the words of eternal life – John 6:68-69 When a person has such faith in Jesus: – They look to Jesus for the solution to any problem they face – They have trust & conviction that what He says is the right answer – They are willing to act with trust/conviction on His Word (Lk. 6:46)
Developing Faith – Faith comes from evidence There are solid reasons for believing, even if cannot see Faith comes from evidence provided by God Himself – God provided signs and wonders – John 5:36; 10:37-38; 14:10-11 – The apostles recorded these signs – John 20:30-31 – Faith comes from the Word of God – Romans 10:17 The Word of God produces faith by the evidence it provides Faith in Jesus gives us the victory in overcoming the world Victorious faith in Jesus comes from the Word of God – We must feed upon the Word of God daily!
