2 Lesson 16 Practicing Abstinence from Sex Define respect. High regard for someone or something

4 List some guidelines that could help you set and stick to your limits for expressing physical affection. Limit expressions to hand holding and kissing Tell the other person your limits beforehand Do not date someone who does not respect your limits Avoid alcohol or other drugs Do not date someone that uses alcohol or drugs Stay in public places

5 When you practice abstinence you protect yourself from what? Unplanned pregnancy HIV PID STD’s example: genital herpes and genital warts- (no cure for either) Emotional trauma

6 How do you protect yourself from those problems? Abstinence is the only method that is 100% effective

7 Who gets STD’s 2/3 of all newly diagnosed STD’s are in teenagers- 3 million teens get an STD each year- many have no cure

8 How does abstaining from sex follow the law? You can be prosecuted for having sex with a minor. If you have sex with someone under the legal age of consent you have committed statutory rape. What is the legal age of consent in Ohio? –16

9 What does abstinence have to do with your reputation? Practicing abstinence will maintain your good reputation What happens the opposite way?

10 What do your parents want for you? Your parents and guardians want you to live a quality life, they know the consequences of being sexually active Abstinence follows parental rules Abstinence shows responsible values, family values, dignity, respect, sexual fidelity (faithfulness) and good character

11 Who has sex? Statistics show that some teenagers are sexually active however, don’t use this information to justify a decision to have sex. No matter what the statistics say there are many teens that are not having sex, who understand the benefits of waiting. Students that are abstinent are not alone! 12 How can you stand up to sexual pressure? Focus on your self-respect Use resistance skills say no Give reasons Broken record Use nonverbal behavior that supports your verbal behavior Avoid situations where you might be pressured sexually Avoid a person who pressures you to have sex Know the law Influence your friends to be abstinent

13 Visualization Close your eyes. Imagine we have just moved into the future. You are no longer a high school student. You are now in your late forties/ early fifties. You have two high school children, a boy and a girl. What are your expectations? What should your children do when pressured to have sex? What about their relationships? Are they allowed to date? How would you feel if they came home pregnant or with an STD?

16 Can you name a TV show or movie that had a scene promoting abstinence? Why is it hard to think of one? Ratings (sex sells)

17 What can a person do if they have already been sexually active? List reasons to abstain in the future Talk to an adult Get tested Consider the health consequences Break off a relationship with a person who does not accept your choice to be abstinent Reevaluate your friends Be honest and direct about your choice Avoid drugs, alcohol, and situations where you might be alone with someone who would pressure you sexually
