I. Nationalism Threatens Europe & Asia A.Failure to WWI Peace 1. Treaty of Versailles didn’t create peace -Germans were blamed 2. New democratic governments emerged 3. Dictators eventually seized power
B. Stalin Transforms Soviet Union 1.Democracy-> Revolution ->Communist 2.Began agricultural & industrial restructuring 3.Major change to industrial power 4.Anyone suspected of criticizing Stalin was arrested & shipped to Siberia (8-13 million deaths) : established total control:Totalitarian
C. Rise of Fascism 1.Benito Mussolini established totalitarian regime in Italy 2.Unlike Stalin, he didn’t want to take control of factories or farms 3.Many were scared 4.Mussolini crushed all opposition& was effective in making Italy a totalitarian state.
D. Nazis Take Over Germany 1.Adolf Hitler= leader of national Socialist German Workers’ Party (Nazi) 2.Nazism based on extreme nationalism. Wanted to unite all of Germany -Believed blue eye, blond hair Aryans formed a master race, destined to rule the world. -Inferior races: Jews, Slavs, and non-whites should serve Aryans 3.Hitler believed in national expansion -Great Depression left 6 million unemployed, last hope was Hitler -Est. Third Reich
