2 WORLD OIL CONSUMPTION COMPARISON QUESTIONS 1.What country has the largest column? What are the reasons that you think that this country has the highest amount? The USA has the largest column. The reasons for this are that America consumes the most in general and we have a lot of oil courtesy of the Gulf of Mexico and Alaska. 1.What country has the smallest/lowest? What reasons would cause this country to have a low amount? Afghanistan has the lowest amount. Afghanistan is mostly desert and they wouldn’t be able to afford to pay the drilling costs. 1.Look at the 5 th and 6 th ranked countries. Are they developed, developing, or one of each? Why do you think that they are where they are in the rankings? Use data to help you answer the question. Spain and Australia are both developed countries. Spain has oil all over the country and it is a developed country. Australia is very isolated and it has oil fields spread across the country.

3 WORLD OIL CONSUMPTION COMPARISON QUESTIONS (CONTINUED) Look at the 7 th and 8 th ranked countries. Are they developing countries? If so, what do they need to do in order to get to the top half of the rankings? Use data from any information to help you answer the question. Afghanistan and the Bahamas are developing countries. It is going to be very difficult for Afghanistan to get more oil because it is mostly a desert. It will have to raise enough money in order to buy some from other close by places. The Bahamas will have to buy oil from the Gulf of Mexico because of how small it is. Name another country (other than the US) that stands out to you on the chart. Describe the cou ntry and what type of impact it has on world consumption. China is the second highest in oil consumption other than the USA. Although it is a developing country it manufactures a lot of the world’s products. Also, because of the population it has, they have to consume a lot and they have enough money to pay for it.
