2  Ensure that all personnel are engaged in CCSS implementation through rigorous lesson design.  Provide high quality professional development and support.  Monitor progress toward implementation through walkthroughs, meetings, feedback, etc.  Publicly communicate your status in implementing the CCSS to your stakeholders monthly.

3  Choose the motivational strategy you believe to be most effective with your staff members. 1. Public Recognition 2. Private Recognition 3. Financial Bonuses 4. Threats and Punishments 5. Constructive Feedback

4  Think back to a time when you received feedback that allowed you to do a better job.  What was it about that feedback that made it so effective?  Share your thoughts with someone else at your table.

5 The essential boundaries for effective feedback are: 1. Accurate 2. Specific 3. Timely 4. Fair

6 The average staff contains:  17% Leaders  53% Model Teachers  28% Skeptics  2% Cynics What is the difference between a skeptic and a cynic?

7  A skeptic is “a doubter of accepted beliefs”  A cynic is “somebody who believes that human actions are insincere…”  Encarta Dictionary

8  Using the description of a skeptic and a cynic; at your table, describe how each would respond to the following statement: “All students can meet the rigor of the Common Core State Standards”

9  A skeptic’s response: “I don’t know – I’ve really worked hard with some students, and they still refused to do the work and were defiant and oppositional. I’ll need to see more evidence that all students can succeed.”  A cynic’s response: “No way – some kids got it and some don’t, and if you believe anything else you’re just being politically correct.”

10 Possible leadership strategies: 1. Don’t underestimate the value of experience. 2. Engage willing volunteers for action research and measure gains in achievement. 3. Acknowledge that the goal is proficiency not perfection. 4. Create safe spaces and times for skepticism, but ban cynicism.

11 Take some time with a partner to complete the responses from these two types of people and develop leadership strategies to positively address the responses.
