3 Confucianism  Based on teachings of Kongfuzi  Kongfuzi was called Confucius by the westerns  Respected the Chinese traditions  He thought the government should if there is to be peace and order  He wanted to teach men good character to work as government officials

4 Confucianism what china was like when Confucius lived The teachings of Confucianism made a major impact on the Chinese  The values he made were respect elders  Love of scholarship  Proper behavior  The sayings of Confucius are wise and practical

6 Influence on the government by Confucianism  Confucianism had a big effect in the government during the Han dynasty  People who worked of the government were traditionally sons of nobles  They might or might not have the Ability and wisdom to do their jobs well  Because of the influence of Confucianism civil servants were hired for their ability  Civil servants are people who do the work of the government

9 The Teachings of Daoism  Based on the Chinese idea of the Dao, or “The Way”  Dao: the force that gave order to the natural universe  Daoism taught people to gain happiness and peace

10 Discovering how to Behave as a Daoist The Dao De Jing says, “Governing a large country is like frying a small fish. You spoil it with too much poking.” It also tells Rulers, “Be weak. Let things alone.” Too many laws and social rules only get ion the way of living naturally and following the Dao The best rulers were the ones who ruled the least

14 Legalism Legalism (Hanfeizi) is the third philosopher of China Hanfeizi was a prince of a royal family of the state of Han He wanted to make peace and order in society But he did not think the Confucian teachings about proper behavior were the answer sts

15 Hanfeizi believed the way to govern was to… Establish strict laws Enforcing them with rewards for good behavior Harsh punishments for bad behavior

16 Qin Dynasty applying to his teachings They built strong central government and a well organized society To achieve these goals they adopted strict Legalist ideas People were forbidden to criticize the government People were put to death for disloyalty and crimes

17 Hanfeizi’s Idea to create a strong society Hanfeizi said that rulers should have absolute power backed up by military might Rulers should trust no one not even their families Hanfeizi said, “He who trusts will be controlled by others.”
