3 doc.: IEEE 802.11-03/364r0 Submission May 2003 Tim Wakeley, HPSlide 3 JC-61 BB-RF Interface BB-RF Ballot failed and 46 comments received – all resolved Core contributing companies believe they will reach consensus on draft for next ballot Next ballot starting on June 17 will represent a finished draft, recommended for adoption by core contributors All 43 JC-61 member companies are urged to review and vote

4 doc.: IEEE 802.11-03/364r0 Submission May 2003 Tim Wakeley, HPSlide 4 JC-61 U/L MAC Interface Partition of Upper and Lower MAC functions completed The U/L MAC interface will take a new direction: –It will adopt the electrical/ link layer/ register mapping of the BB-RF draft –This will enable a low gate count, low pin count, very low power interface for hand held devices –This will enable a low gate count, 1m cable length, low pin count interface for other embedded devices –The transport layer will be designed to be mapped into PCI Express for those applications that will already have PCI Express and can live with the high gate count, higher power standard interface –This will enable a path of further integration in the future without designing a new electrical interface

5 doc.: IEEE 802.11-03/364r0 Submission May 2003 Tim Wakeley, HPSlide 5 JC-61 U/L MAC Next Steps Investigate adoption of BB-RF electrical, link layer, and register mapping Development of an optional Lower MAC initiated DMA Master to dramatically reduce the amount of RAM needed in 11ag modules and the dependency on host CPU interrupts Development of transport layer

6 doc.: IEEE 802.11-03/364r0 Submission May 2003 Tim Wakeley, HPSlide 6 JC-61 Ballots for next meeting 4 ballots will start ~June 17 1.Ballot to determine if the traditional MAC- PHY interface work should end 2.Ballot to determine if JC-61 should send a letter to the FCC in support of a "module approval rule making" process starting with an Notice of Inquiry. 3.Ballot of the amended BB-RF draft 4.JEDEC BoD mandated ballot to approve the scope of JC-61
