17 UM Medical Center Achievements Center for Aids Research (CFAR) grant awarded in 2011, one of only 17 such centers in the country The University of Miami Ear Institute houses the nations second most active cochlear implant program The Diabetes Research Institute has pioneered many of the techniques used worldwide in islet cell transplantation The Transplant Institute at the University of Miami/ Jackson is responsible for half of the pediatric multi- visceral transplants in the world The Miami Project to Cure Paralysis is the worlds largest comprehensive spinal cord injury research center The Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center has 200+ clinical trials underway and $37 million in research grants

18 Head and neck cancer is often detected when its progressed to a late stage. A Sylvester physician has developed a test to detect this type of cancer at an early stage and its a simple mouthwash. The University of Miami/Jackson Memorial Medical Centers Ryder Trauma Center is home to the U.S. Army Trauma Training Center (ATTC). This is the only place in the nation where the Army trains its medical teams. An enhanced vaccine to treat brain tumors in children was developed and tested by a Sylvester researcher and has received FDA approval for use with patients. The HIHG is a major player in the arena has stored blood samples from hundreds of thousands of patients, continually work to catalog the genetic makeup of each one, and gather the scientists to look for patterns that will lead to treatments. The Hussman Institute is home to one of the largest academic gene sample banks in the U.S., with more than 120,000 individuals. According to scientists from other top medical schools, Harvard and Stanford, ISCI is leading the nation in its work with stem cells in treating heart disease. UM Medical Center Achievements
