Introduction of TV White Space IEEE tv TV White space (1) TV White space - slivers of unused spectrum that sit between licensed broadcast channels FCC , “Unlicensed Operation in the TV Broadcast Bands” - September 23, 2010 Advantages of TV White space - Use the similar TV channel frequencies all over the world - There is no special interference source except the TV signals. - Excellent propagation characteristics that allow signals to reach farther and penetrate walls and other structures. Slide 3Cheolho Shin and Sangsung Choi., ETRI

Introduction of TV White Space IEEE tv TV White space (2) Applications for TWS Slide 4 ApplicationsDescription super Wi-Fi hot spots Access to this spectrum could enable more powerful public Internet connections with extended range, fewer dead spots, and improved individual speeds as a result of reduced congestion on existing networks campus networksbetter able to keep pace with user’s increasing demands for bandwidth home networksbetter able to support real time streaming video applications remote sensingwater supplies by municipalities and support for the smart grid potential application limited only by the imagination Cheolho Shin and Sangsung Choi., ETRI

Introduction of TV White Space IEEE tv TV White space (3) Slide 5 CHFrequency(MHz)Target device Fixed device Fixed device Fixed device Fixed device Fixed device, personal/portable device Fixed device, personal/portable device Fixed device and personal/portable devices can be operated in the TV white spaces on an unlicensed basis Cheolho Shin and Sangsung Choi., ETRI

Introduction of TV White Space IEEE tv TV White space (4) Main issues for Unlicensed TV bands devices(TVBD) - Eliminating the requirement that TV bands devices that incorporate geo- location and database access must also listen (sense) to detect the signals of TV stations and low power auxiliary service stations (wireless microphones) - While the sensing requirement for TVBDs is eliminated, continued development of this capability is encouraged because it holds promise to further improvements in spectrum efficiency in the TV spectrum in the future and will be a vital tool for providing opportunistic access to other spectrum bands - TV bands databases that provide lists of available channels to TVBDs must receive approval by the FCC Commission Slide 6Cheolho Shin and Sangsung Choi., ETRI

Introduction of TV White Space IEEE tv A example of Channel allotment in TWS Can use 5 Channels per 1 TV Channel Can configure 5 piconets simultaneously. Slide 7Cheolho Shin and Sangsung Choi., ETRI
