1 doc.: IEEE thz Submission July 2013 Akifumi Kasamatsu, NICTSlide 1 Project: IEEE P Working Group for Wireless Personal Area Networks (WPANs) Submission Title: Information on THz related issues at ITU-R Study Group 1 Date Submitted: 16 July, 2013 Source: Akifumi Kasamatsu, Norihiko Sekine, Iwao Hosako and Hiroyo Ogawa National Institute of Information and Communications Technology 4-2-1, Nukuikita, Koganei, , Tokyo, Japan Voice: , FAX: , Re: n/a Abstract:ITU-R Working Party (WP) 1A currently submitted a draft new Study Question on “Technical and operational characteristics of the active services operating in the range GHz” to ITU-R Study Group (SG) 1 for adoption. ITU-R SG1 adopted a new Study Question at the last meeting and it is now circulated within ITU member states for approval. The draft new Study Question and the other input document related to THz technologies are briefly summarized. Purpose:Informing IGTHz on recent THz standardization activities at ITU-R Notice:This document has been prepared to assist the IEEE P It is offered as a basis for discussion and is not binding on the contributing individual(s) or organization(s). 3 doc.: IEEE thz Submission Status of a draft new Study Question New Question ITU-R SM.[THZ]. “Technical and operational characteristics of the active services operating in the range GHz” was proposed at WP1A July meeting in 2012 and WP1A approved to submit a new Question to SG1 for adoption. SG1 adopted a new Question and send a circular letter (CACE/615) to ITU member states for approval on June 27. If there will be no objections from member states by August 27, 2013, the approval by consultation procedure will be initiated. July 2013 Akifumi Kasamatsu, NICT Slide 3

4 doc.: IEEE thz Submission A draft new Study Question decides that the following Question should be studied What are the technical and operational characteristics of active services in the frequency range GHz? further decides 1that sharing studies between active and passive services, as well as among active services be carried out taking into account the service characteristics mentioned in decides; 2that the results of studies in the range GHz should be brought to the attention of the other Study Groups; 3that the results of the above studies should be included in Recommendations and/or Reports; 4that initial results of the studies should be available by July 2013 Akifumi Kasamatsu, NICT Slide 4

6 doc.: IEEE thz Submission Summary and Remarks Administrations are invited to make a contribution on a working document towards a preliminary draft new Report ITU-R SM.[THZ_TREND]. If THz group might wish to have specific frequency bands for THz communication systems above 275 GHz, it may be recommended to send a liaison statement to ITU-R and ask them whether those frequency bands can be used for active services without interference to passive services, by giving them technical and operational characteristics of THz communication systems developed by THz group.
