The total population of practising professional artists in 2009 was estimated at just over 44,000 The growth in the numbers of practising professional artists has levelled out over the past 10 years. However, there are nearly 40 percent more artists in Australia than there were 20 years ago. Artists living in capital cities earn 22 percent more than those in regional centres
