In L50, we have learnt the life and work of Einstein, today we will learn more about him. To know more about his theory and his life. 1. Before we watch the vedio, just look at Ex1 in Wb, page 75. If it is wrong, correct it.
Para 1. Eintein s theory about light. Light from the stars was bent as it passed the sun. How much it was bent and how far the stars moved.
Para 2 It took a long time for people to accept his scientific idea How : Only 3 persons understood it It was difficult to prove his ideas----- Stuck to People who had been watching the stars surported him
Para 3 He loved peace and took Swiss nationality. Why : He didn t have to join the army. Swiss didn t take sides in the war. He believed: Fighting and killing in wars was wrong.
Para 4. Why did Eintein left Europe for the USA in Why: He was a Jew. His friends were hurt. He wrote a letter to a newspaper to say that these acts were wrong.
Before Einstein, scientists believed that light travelled through space in a straight line. Para 1 1) travel, quarrel, level, signalll 2)control, refer
2. But Einstein was able to prove that Light coming from the stars was bent as it passed the sun. 3. It appeared to scientists on earth that the stars had moved. 4. He worked out how much the light would be bent.
in space in outer space in the universe in heaven in the sky in nature on the earth/on earth on Mars
1)prove sth., prove to be, prove sth. to be, prove+adj., prove+that Einstein's theory proved (to be) correct. 2) appear seem, seem Why do you appear/seem (to be) so pale?
10 There appear/seem to have been great changes here in the past decade. It appears/seems that they are short of money now.
Para 2 It was said that only three people could understand it at that time. The difficulty was how he could prove his ideas to other scientists. But Einstein stuck to his opinion and went on with his research. stick
The man stuck his fork into a potato. Stick a stamp on an envelope before you put it into the mail-box. The key(was) stuck in the lock. stick at stick out stick together
From that time on Einstein was greatly respected as the leading scientist of the century. (para 2) 1)respect sb. for sth. respect sb. as sth respect The prime minister is held in the greatest respect.
Para 3 He had taken Swiss nationality and therefore did not join the army,as Switzerland did not take sides in the war. take sides(with sb.)/take the side(of sb.) We were careful not to take sides for fear of getting into trouble.
When Germany was ruled by Hitler in the early 1930's, Einstein, who was a Jew, found it impossible to continue living in Germany 1) in the early 1930s 2) in the late 1930's, 3) in the middle of 1930's
What he wanted to see was an end to all the armies of the world. what he wanted to see
