Vitamin A – Fat Soluble Found in full fat milk, cheese, eggs, oily fish, liver and butter. Added to margarine and spreads. Formed from beta-carotene and found in carrots, cabbage and yellow fruits
Vitamin A For good eyesight and night vision
Vitamin A - Deficiency Deficiency is rare in UK as it is found in a wide variety of food. Lack of Vitamin a can cause night blindness and poor eyesight. Excess in pregnancy can cause birth defects and women should avoid eating liver.
Vitamin B1 - Water Soluble Vitamin B1 - Thiamine Helps the release of energy from carbohydrates Needed for normal growth in children Helps the nervous system Found in breakfast cereals, potatoes and bread
Vitamin B1 Deficiency Lack of Vitamin B1 - Thiamine loss of appetite slow growth is children beri-beri (severe)
Vitamin B2 - Water Soluble Vitamin B2 - Riboflavin Helps the release of energy from carbohydrates Needed for normal growth in children Found in breakfast cereals, potatoes,bread, red meat
Vitamin B2 Deficiency Lack of Vitamin B2 – Rioflavin cracks around the mouth and lips tongue and eyes may become inflamed general tiredness
Vitamin C – Ascorbic Acid Needed for the absorption of IRON Good Sources – Citrus fruits, green vegetables and tomatoes
Vitamin C – Ascorbic Acid Protects against infection Helps to maintain healthy blood vessels Heals wounds
Vitamin C Deficiency Lack of Vitamin C can cause: Mouth and gum infections Slow healing of wounds Scurvy - extreme
Vitamin D Works with Calcium to help strong bones and teeth Produced by the body when exposed to sunlight
Vitamin D Good sources can be found in oily fish, eggs, cheese and butter
Vitamin D Deficiency Lack of Vitamin D can cause: Rickets in children and brittle bones on older people. Rickets are becoming a problem in the UK due to children not playing outside in the sunlight.
