RESUME WRITING A resume is a representation of YOU on paper; it is a summary of your goals, education, experience, strengths, and interests.
Things to Remember You only have ONE chance to make a FIRST impression. Your resume may be the first impression an employer gets of YOU. Studies indicate that typically a resume gets 45 seconds of attention before an employer is either 1) interested, or 2) sets it aside. Fit your resume on ONE page. Use ~12 pt font. Print on good quality paper – white, ivory, pastel. Your resume will be changed and adapted as you gain education, experience, and career objectives.
Sections of the Resume 1. Contact info. 2. Objective 3. Education 4. Employment history 5. Skills/expertise 6. Activities/honors/ service 7. References
Contact Information Your name Your permanent address Your home phone number Your cell phone number Your e-mail address
Career or Job Objective The objective is geared toward the job for which youre applying. If your resume is for no particular job, leave out the objective. Example: Objective: A summer internship as an apprentice with an auto repair shop that will utilize my education and training in auto mechanics.
Education Name and location of school Degree and graduation date Major and minor GPA ( If youre still in high school, list your projected graduation date)
Employment History List all previous and present employers Place of employment Dates of employment Job title Job responsibilities
Skills and Qualifications Special skills you possess that pertain to the job: leadership, keyboarding, welding, foreign language, public speaking, organization, software proficiency (give examples, list courses, positions held, programs used, etc.)
Activities – Honors - Service Your leadership, sociability, and energy level is shown by your involvement in different activities. Clubs, sports, community service, academic and other honors Include dates and offices held
