3  Reoccurring symbols, images, or archetypes.  Eyes are continually described  Everything is resolved around the tree.  Continual conflicts  Large ideas that are addressed  Consider….  The setting, the characterization, and the conflicts.

4  How are setting, characterization and conflict connected to help develop a theme?  It’s like a puzzle  Dump out everything  Sort through it  Put it together.

5 THE WHENTHE WHERE Consider the difference….  A middle class mom in the 1950’s  A middle class mom in 2012  What’s different about this moms?  Consider the difference…  A woman in ancient China (consider the Joy Luck Club)  A woman in Ireland in the 1930’s (Consider Angela’s Ashes)  A woman in America in 2012

6  What changed about these woman based on setting?  How are setting and characterization connected?  Where the story is set will help to develop specific characteristics of a character.

7 CONSIDER…. WHEN FACED WITH THE FOLLOWING EXTERNAL CONFLICT…  A shy 6 th grade boy who keeps to himself.  An outspoken 6 th grade bully who physically and verbally threatens children.  An 8 th grade bully comes and pushes him….  How does the shy boy react?  How does the bully react?

8  What changes about the conflict based on the characterization of the children?  How are conflict and characterization connected?  The way in which a person is characterized can either help predict what types of conflict they will get into or how they will resolve a conflict.

9 CONSIDER THE PRIOR EXAMPLES WITH THE BULLY. HERE ARE SOME POSSIBLE RESOLUTIONS: WHAT IS THE MESSAGE OF THE STORY BASED ON EACH RESOLUTION?  The shy boy runs away and spends his time dodging all bullies for the rest of his life.  The 6 th grade bully is so humiliated by the attack that he changes his ways and becomes a model citizen.  The shy boy stands up for himself and is able to deflect an attack through verbal communication Avoid danger at all costs. Do unto others and you would want done unto you. Verbal communication is the best solution to an altercation.

10  What changed about the story based on the various resolutions?  How are conflict and theme connected?  The way in which the conflict is resolved helps to develop a theme.
