14 www.library.qut.edu.au LIBRARY SERVICES Solicitations from ‘Print on Demand’ publishers Recently, some commercial journal publishers have been experimenting with ‘author-side’ fees as an option for providing open access while maintaining current profit levels. New technology makes it possible to print paper-back books in minutes from digital text files.

15 www.library.qut.edu.au LIBRARY SERVICES Solicitations from ‘Print on Demand’ publishers These developments have given rise to a new ‘business opportunity’ – print on demand publishing. Authors ‘gift’ their text to the publisher in exchange for a couple of free copies. The publisher then owns the work and is free to sell it to make a profit. Some eg VDM Verlag and Icfai Press have been approaching authors of PhD theses that available online.

16 www.library.qut.edu.au LIBRARY SERVICES Solicitations from ‘Print on Demand’ publishers Warning: Read the small print of the contract. If the publisher owns the copyright, you will not be able to re-use your own work without their permission. At the very least, you must assert the right to retain a copy of the digital version of your thesis in QUT ePrints.
