Enterprise Architecture – A Year of Growth British Columbia Institute of Technology – Strategic Vision Enterprise Architecture: A Framework The Year in Review – EA Accomplishments Changing Perceptions and IT Governance Enterprise Architecture Models What is next for Enterprise Architecture? Questions.

Vision:Vision: BCIT will be Canada’s premier polytechnic institution. Mission:Mission: To build pathways for career success in the global marketplace through teaching excellence and applied education and research Size:Size: Approximately 48,000 students are enrolled annually at BCIT. BCIT’s Vision and Mission

BCIT – Experience it!

BCIT’s Vision 2001 – BCIT’s President publishes new strategic direction –“BCIT will become Canada’s Premier Polytechnic” 2002 – Academic Leaders (VP, Education and Deans of Faculties) publish –“Educational Technology/Information Technology White Paper” 2004 – Engage an external consultant to articulating a new vision –began discussions about Enterprise Architecture Oct 2004 - the TEK (technology-enabled knowledge) Initiative is approved –$25M CAD over seven years –An initiative to enhance teaching, learning, research and business at BCIT through the strategic use of technology –Enterprise Architecture identified as foundational

Enterprise Architecture Collaboration & Connectivity “Connect BCIT to the World” Intelligent Learning Spaces “Equip BCIT’s Learning Spaces” Best Teaching Practices “Support Effective Learning & Teaching” Applied Research “Advance Polytechnic Education” The Business of BCIT “Ensure Effective Work Processes” Strategic Goal Areas from TEK Vision

BCIT – TEK Initiative

What is Enterprise Architecture? A Framework Enterprise Architecture is a framework that : continuously aligns technology services with changing goals and objectives of the institution based on standards (people, process and technology) Provides a common language to communicate the value of IT investments to the business allows IT organizations to more strategically and effectively support the Institution’s Strategic Vision

Why Enterprise Architecture @ BCIT? Alignment of IT to the Institute’s Strategy – “Doing the Right Things” –Ensure the adoption of technology aligns to the changing educational / business strategy and mission Improved Planning and Reduced Complexity – “Doing Things Right” –Create an Enterprise Architecture – establishing a process that is simplifies researching, building/acquiring, maintaining and retiring technology Adoption of Disciplined Strategies – “Best Practices” –Adopt IT “best practice” disciplines such as IT Governance (ITG), IT Service Management (ITIL), Project Management (PM), etc

The Value of Enterprise Architecture Alignment of IT to the Institute’s Strategy – “Doing the Right Things” –Ensure the adoption of technology aligns to the changing educational / business strategy and mission Improved Planning and Reduced Complexity – “Doing Things Right” –Create an Enterprise Architecture – establishing a process that is simplifies researching, building/acquiring, maintaining and retiring technology Adoption of Disciplined Strategies – “Best Practices” –Adopt IT “best practice” disciplines such as IT Governance (ITG), IT Service Management (ITIL), Project Management (PM), etc WebCT6 CE Integration Server Architecture Change Management

Changing Perceptions – IT is Strategic How many times do you hear that IT is a cost to your institution? We can change that perception by using Enterprise Architecture IT becomes the trusted partner to enable strategy and deliver results

BCIT Technology Lifecycle - Definitions - Applications Researching Investing Retiring Steady Applications consideration for future implementation. Applications should be used only for pre- approved, proof-of-concept projects. Must be kept isolated from other 3 quadrants Applications that are mission critical. Core Applications that deliver on the strategy of the institute. Usually found in the Core Services Catalogue. Applications being phased out Any tool in the retiring phase that is core to the strategic goals or objectives of the institution should have a replacement app in either the Researching or Investing quadrants. Applications that are solid and mainstream. Products in this phase of the cycle may be maintained for upgrades. New or expanded implementations are discouraged.
