Monfragüe is a wonderful place An exercise in elementary level English by students of the course in 2013 Curso del inglés enfocado al turismo
The National park of Monfragüe is in the north of Extremadura. It is between Madrid and Lisbon. Lisbon is in the wrong place!
The National Park has a landscape full of rich colours and the sky is enormous.
In the park there are two rivers, Tajo and Tietar. There are some big cliffs, the most famous is Gypsy Jump. Here there is a view point and you can see a lot of vultures and other birds.
Where to stay
There are different kinds of accommodation for example the Hospedería. It is a quiet and friendly hotel.
Things to see and do
The favourite viewpoint for tourists is the Gypsy Jump. On this cliff there are 100 Griffon Vultures’ nests.
There is a large selection of birds. It is a paradise for twitchers.
Monfragüe was declared a national park because there are about 300 different vertebrates and 1700 species of plants. 1 typical plant is the cistus. It has a beautiful white flower
A lot of deer live in the park. The deer change their antlers every year.
Humans have lived in the park for thousands years. Under the castle you can see prehistoric paintings. This castle is Moorish.
The view points are important places to see the park and listen to nature.
This building was used to dry dark tobacco. This building and similar buildings are by the side of the river Tietar. It has many holes for the air to cross the building.
You can do many different activities in the national park, for example, walking routes, mountain biking and fishing.
The gastronomy of Extremaudura is varied and rich. They make the food using traditional techniques. Extemadura is very famous for its hams and cheeses.
The most important tradition in the park is the Romeria of the Monfragüe virgin. This is a very old and religious tradition that many people see and the people go to the castle.
Every year the national park celebrates the International Ornithology Fair. That weekend is dedicated to the world of birds. A lot of tourists visit this exhibition.
In the year 1970 the government decided to plant eucalyptus, but it was a mistake. From the year 2000 the government extracted the trees and planted the original trees, Holme Oak and Cork Oak.
In general the national park is very clean, but sometimes In Villarreal there is a lot of rubbish, because they only collect once a week.
The park has two damns. They were built in the year They are used for producing electricity.
We hope you can visit Monfragüe in the future
