HOW EFFECTIVE IS THE COMBINATION OF YOUR MAIN PRODUCT AND ANCILLARY TASKS? By Elspeth Barron
When creating all three products I knew how important it was that they all shared the same train of thought if I was going to engage an audience. They all needed to focus on one main topic that I wanted the audience to be absorbed in. My main aim was for the ancillary tasks to highlight the topic of young performers and there are fun but driven and passionate people. As both of my ancillary tasks were promotional pieces it was vital that the audience were drawn in by the topic but knew what it was all about.
When creating the TV Listings page I wanted to show the cast having fun and include an interview which would be informal, laidback but informative. This was so the audience felt relaxed and could relate to the quirkiness of the show and it’s laidback but informative format. To engage the audience into watching the documentary it had to be clear as to what the show was about and why people would want to watch it. I think I have achieved this in the product I have created.
In producing the radio trailer I had the clear aim to follow up my other ancillary task by creating a fun, laidback format but still seemingly informative. I had to be aware of selling the show in a short amount of time and still using it in combination with the other products to be successful in gaining an audience for the documentary. I used a entertaining musical theatre song as background music to keep the link with theatre and to make it clear to the audience what the show was about. By also using one of the cast members voice to tell the story of their dream at the beginning of the trailer it made the story real and gave the audience opportunity to hear a snippet of what the whole documentary was about.
Finally, when constructing the five minute extract from my documentary I had to be aware of how in my two ancillary tasks I had promoted the show. They was no point creating a show on a whole different topic to what I had promoted. The combination of promotional products had created an effective entry into producing the documentary with a clear aim and focus to what they wanted to hear, or what they were expecting to be taught about. With a combination of voiceover and interviews I created an informative documentary with a clear objective. The other thing I had to keep in mind was I had promoted it as a relaxed, laidback format. With the crossover between information and the storyline of the cast it kept interesting and broke up the informative segments giving time for the audience to think on what they had seen and heard.
In conclusion, I believe my products kept a clear objective and focus in mind which led them to work well together to promote the main product which in turn was relevant and adhered to the promotion it had been given. They collaborated effectively to entice and then engage the audience in the story and the importance of the topic being addressed. It was unique and original whilst keeping the same organic, realistic impression the documentary wanted to reflect.
