1 Good Morning and WELCOME
Good Morning L&G and WELCOME to the University of Wolverhampton. Thank you for taking a day out of your busy schedules to spend time with us here at the Science Park. I know that you are all busy - despite this being the time of year when your friends, as mine do, spend all their time saying; Oh it must be ever so quiet for you now with all the students gone… NO. Or the other favorite about teachers and their “six week holiday”… Its almost the season for the perennial summer news stories about exam results, grade inflation and how assessments are not as rigorous as when we were young.. It has been another whirlwind year in the world of education - whatever sector you operate in… In higher education, for example.. We have seen … Jon Elsmore, Dean of Students

2 University Strategic Plan:
Vision – ‘Where we want to be’ To be The Opportunity University renowned for its creativity and innovation, developing students and staff who are entrepreneurial, eminently employable and well-connected within a research and professionally informed environment. Mission – ‘Our overriding purpose’ To be an employer focused university connected with our local, national and global communities delivering opportunity and academic excellence.

3 Goals – ‘What we must do to achieve our vision’
(iii). Enhance the employability of our students KPI - We will measure our success by increasing the number of graduates gaining employment and their value in the marketplace

4 Publication of Key Information Sets:

5 Current performance Traditionally high proportion of graduates in employment following graduation, or undertaking a further programme of study, But the 2009/10 DLHE survey results show a decline in the employability of our graduates as well as an improvement in the employability of graduates from other regional competitor universities. To achieve our stated goal then significant improvements are needed.

6 How we will achieve this:
Provide all of our students with the opportunity to undertake an element of structured, credit bearing work experience as part of their course: full-time, part-time, paid, unpaid, internships, volunteering, charity work and consultancy opportunities with University partners, suppliers and tenant companies self-employment opportunities the University will develop increasing opportunities to employ our own students and graduates.

7 Enable increasing numbers of our students to participate in mentoring opportunities (including e-mentoring) provided by our employer contacts and University alumni. ‘Employability Award’ to demonstrate to potential employers the work experience, employability skills and the extra curricular activities they have undertaken including involvement in student societies.

8 Promote enterprise and entrepreneurship in our curricula providing opportunity for those graduates wishing to start their own businesses through a specific ‘Graduate Incubation Programme’ of support drawing on resources at the University’s Science Park and e-innovation Centre. Provide necessary development and support for our academic staff (including Personal Tutors) so that they can provide effective employability and employment advice to our students and through employer-informed curriculum content.
