What is a COGNATE? Definition: Cognate n. a word related to a word in another language [Latin co (same) + gnatus (born)] Examples of Cognates between Spanish and French: ami/ amigo (friend) sympathique/ simpático(nice) chanter/cantar(to sing)
English comes from the Germanic language family. Spanish comes from the Romance language family.
WHY So WHY are there so many cognates between Spanish and English?

Julius Caesar led and army north into Gaul (modern France) and instituted Latin as the major language. Latin mixed with Gaulish and later became known as French. In 1066 William the Conqueror, the Duke of Normandy, invaded and conquered England. With him, he brought the French language. English adopted many French words. These French words came from Latin and therefore share the same roots as Spanish.

Lucky for us… There are thousands of cognates between Spanish and English and amigos falsos are much less common!
