2 Background on SEBT One of the twelve health trusts in NI Since 1990 has worked with In4tek –Developing a shared health and social care electronic record system –Patient Centred Information System –AKA PARIS –First NHS site to implement PARIS

4 Further tools provided –Diary scheduling –Stock –Consumable ordering –Linked through care planning

5 Who uses PARIS? Currently 27 Professional groups Including –District Nursing –Occupational Therapy –Care Management –Hospital Social Workers –Podiatry –Physiotherapy –Mental Health –Children with disabilities

6 Who uses PARIS? Proposed professional group implementations include: –Mental Health South –Crisis response team –Regional secure unit (Shannon) The list continues to grow.

8 What is the CMC? Central department which handles telephonic referrals 62,000 referrals last year 7 call handlers –Receive referrals –Making sure patient referral goes to the relevant care team –Based in Knockbracken Healthcare park

10 How PARIS works Using a step-by-step example: –GP refers patient after consultation to e.g. a physiotherapist –GP contacts Call Management Centre (CMC) –CMC retrieves patient’s record held within Central Index

11 What is Central Index? Electronic database holding information on patients within SEBT Maintained by the IT department in Knockbracken Healthcare Park –Situated close to the CMC for more effective inter-departmental communication Maintenance includes: –System debugging –Input/update patient records

12 How PARIS works Using a step-by-step example: –GP refers patient after consultation to e.g. a physiotherapist –GP contacts Call Management Centre (CMC) –CMC retrieves patient’s record held within Central Index –CMC forwards the referral to the relevant care team

13 How care teams use PARIS Care team manager assigns referral to individual health/social care professional If a referral is wrongly assigned, care team can return the referral back to the CMC

14 Security measures of PARIS Username and Password Different access rights for each user –e.g. Mental health record access restricted to relevant profession Password protected screensaver All actions are recorded to prevent staff misconduct System backed-up daily

15 Drawbacks of PARIS Currently only used in SEBT –Lack of integration with other health trusts No integration with Royal Hospitals and Belfast City Hospital

16 Benefits of PARIS Staff having access to core information about the user and easily identifying other staff involvement Preventing the duplication of information with each separate referral Shared assessment information used by staff across the trust The ability to share critical risk/alert information

17 Benefits of PARIS continued… The ability to share caseload information, particularly with evening and night staff Sharing case load at short notice when staff are absent Managing case load allocation and automatically sharing client information for onward referrals Automation of referral letters

18 Conclusion PARIS has fundamentally changed the way health and social care services are delivered The efficiency of PARIS has been recognised and is being implemented in other NHS trusts, e.g. Swansea
