Plenary session: Scaling up & out of research Building Block session: Making the most of projects / building upon the legacy (Martin van Brakel / Ewen Le Borgne)

What is the unique value proposition of this building block / Why do we need this for our CRPs? We have to ensure we learn from the past With complex projects that is even more important A lot of project information, capacities, relationships goes to waste if not capitalized upon Building block: Making the most of project legacy

Who is already doing some work around this, how, with what success? CPWF: How not to do this? Legacy building done as an afterthought / difficult to move beyond compliance ILRI: IBLI legacy into the Dryland systems program IITA: used project reviews to develop new projects Building block: Making the most of project legacy

What are principles / critical success factors / interventions / actions to take advantage of this BB? Start now! Focus on documentation and on engagement Map key boundary partners Get coordinators to keep oversight of all small projects and to pay attention to learning… Choose your partners carefully so they can implement the work and build upon the project – Build the ownership of the legacy Convey what is innovative about a project Move away from ‘single-failure points’ (people) / diversify capacities Get involved in ToC/impact assessment (baseline) from the start and explain how we (comms/KM) can support scaling up Organize a (yearly?) reflection workshop at the end of the project / by the time you can do impact assessment, possibly building upon other workshops involving partners, comms, M&E, researchers… Building block: Making the most of project legacy

What are principles/critical success factors/interventions/actions needed to take advantage of this BB? What to document: – Assumptions in ToC Wobbly assumptions Important assumptions for scaling up – Innovative work – Useful procedural information (e.g. publishing guidelines etc.) What to – Data management – Information management – Partnership engagement – Capacity development – Exit strategy Building block: Making the most of project legacy

What were main discussion points? How to get small projects coordinated in a logical/coherent way? Projects are the results of individuals and relationships – this influences the legacy very MUCH Building interest/engagement into the innovative legacy Focus on both documentation and engagement (process documentation, data/info management) Participatory messaging (engaging researchers in a social learning process to define what is new/innovative that will have some impact) Boundary partners that influence your work Optional Building block: Making the most of project legacy

What gaps remain and what will be done about it? Optional Building block: Making the most of project legacy
