1 Learning outcomes:  To know what the pH scale is.  Know how to measure pH  Give examples of different acids and alkalis. Read page 56 and 57.

2 Acid  The pH of an acid is less than 7.  The lower the pH the stronger the acid.  Alkali  The pH of an alkali is more than 7.  The higher the pH, the stronger the alkali. Some solutions are neither acidic or alkaline. The are neutral. Their pH is 7.

3  You can find the pH of something by using universal indicator (UI).  When you add it to a solution it changes to one of the colours on the pH scale.

4  A dilute solution contains a lot of water. It makes the solution weaker.  A concentrated solution contains very little water. It make the solution very strong.
