The Beginning The first time Pi was used in an equation was when Archimedes used it to find the area of a circle with a inscribed regular polygon in the circle.

What Is Pi Pi is the value of the ratio of a circle’s diameter to it’s circumference. It is used throughout engineering, science and math so it’s one of the most important symbols in mathmatics.

Example of Pi If you want to find the circumference of a circle and you already know the radius. You have to multiply the radius by 2 and then multiply it by pi.

The Symbol The idea of the pi symbol came from William Jones who was an English mathematician in 1706.
