Objectives & Strategies of LSOs Vision Mission Statement Set Objectives Develop Strategies Objective: A desired goal, outcome or specific result that an organisation intends to achieve Strategies: the actions that an organisation takes to achieve a specific objective
- Strategic (corporate) Planning – Far reaching planning (perhaps between 2 and 5 years) through which a business seeks to manage resources and business opportunities to achieve long-term objectives. - Tactical (departmental) Planning – Medium term planning (about 1-2 years duration) which provides some detail on how the organisations overall corporate plan will be achieved. This planning is usually carried out at the departmental (or divisional) level. - Operational Planning – Planning at lowers levels of management of the day to day activities of an organisation. This is a detailed level of planning, often of a technical or practical nature. Although its general direction is set by higher levels of management, it is usually undertaken by supervisors or leading hands. Levels of Planning
Categories of Communication Business communication can be divided into two categories: Internal Communication: Takes place from one person/group within the business to another (i.e. employees, management, owners/shareholders, etc) External Communication: Takes place between the business and people/groups in its external environment (i.e. competitors, suppliers, community, etc)
Internal Communication Internal communication channels can include: Upward Communication: Communication that flows from lower to higher levels within the business (i.e. employee – manager) Downward Communication: Communication that flows from higher to lower levels within the business (i.e. manager – employee) Lateral Communication: Channels of communication between people at the same level in the business (i.e. manager-manager, employee- employee)
Upward, Downward or Lateral? 1.A manager receives a phone call from an employee regarding his absence from work 2.A management meeting regarding projected sales for September 3.A CEO sends a memo out to management regarding budget deadlines 4.A manager instructs a new employee on how to process orders
Methods of Communication There are two types of communication available to people in business: Verbal: Communication based on words, both spoken and written Non-verbal: Conveying of messages without the use of spoken word

Body Language Body language is a form of communication that uses facial expression, body gestures and appearance to convey messages to others. Body language is often useful to determine if someone has understood the message you are trying to convey
A great barrier to communications rests in the fact that humans perceive the same things differently.
What do you see first? 1. An old woman or a young girl? 2. A woman’s face or a man playing saxophone? 3. A woman staring into a mirror or a skull? 4. Two faces or one? 5. A rabbit or a duck? 6. Eskimo or Native American? 7. The book turned toward or against you?
