2 The Rights to Englishmen Back in England Magna Carta (Great Charter) King John – (Story of Robin Hood) King not above the law –in print Property could not be seized by kings No taxed without vote of prominent Could not be put on trial only by officials word (without witness) Could only be punished by jury of peers Later – elected government officials added

3 Parliament – model for Colonists government House of Commons * Elected House of Lords * nonelected, nobles, judges, and clergy King far away – colonists formed their own elected assemblies Parliament granted colonists self government, but kept ultimate authority. Colonists disliked this and the governors appointed to rule them.

4 Increase Mather – Challenges Kings Rule 1600s – Massachusetts colonist get caught smuggling – King takes away its charter to rule itself King James appoints Edmund Andros as governor - strict ruler, outlawed assemblies, and limited town meetings Colonists sent Increase Mather to plead with king

5 William and Mary Restore English Rights James II – restricted rights in colonies and in England Parliament gets mad – goes to James daughter and her husband in secret James fears for his life -- loosing support he flees England Glorious Revolution

6 English Bill of Rights William and Mary restore Englishmens rights Monarch could not cancel laws or impose taxes without support of the Parilment Free elections and frequent meetings of Parliament to be held Excessive fines and cruel punishment forbidden People could complain to king or queen without being arrested Government to be based on laws made by Parliament – not by King

7 Colonists Claim English Rights Colonists hear of whats going on in England Jail Andros Ask Parliament to restore colonists rights Massachusetts get right to elect government officials, but have to accept a governor appointed by the King New System set up
