12 Le génie en première classe -1/3 of our graduate students are Canadian; -International students are coming from Iran, France, China, Colombie, Tunisie… -Close to 1/3 of international students are female students; -Mother tongue of ½ of our graduate students is French, 2% is English, 48% is another language! -However, at the Ph.D. level, 50% of the current language used by our student is French, close to 18% is English, the other 32% is other languages! 06/10/ PICTURE OF GRADUATE STUDENTS AT POLYTECHNIQUE

(Réussir au doctorat) - CAP7005 Handling of scientific and technical information: 1 cr. (Traitement de l’information scientifique et technique) - CAP7010 Creativity: yes you can : 1 cr. (La créativité à votre portée) - CAP7015 Leading a research project : 1 cr. (Conduire un projet de recherche) Objectives: To discuss the technical and practical aspects of the doctoral education; To develop their own objectives and better organize their research work; To master the tools of bibliographic research; To make decisions, create and conduct his own doctoral project. 06/10/ MANDATORY TRAINING WORKSHOPS FOR PH.D. 22 Le génie en première classe -Self development and career opportunities seem more important for international students than the contribution they can bring to knowledge. -All would like to become university professors! -All mentioned the difficulties related to the management of their research project. However, International students indicate that personal difficulties and language difficulties are as well or more important. -Production of results, papers and the thesis itself seem to be a central issue for international students. 06/10/ WHAT DO OUR DOCTORAL CANDIDATES THINK? 24 Le génie en première classe Time to completion at the Ph.D level: - Overall, Permanent residents students take one semester less than Canadian students to complete their Ph.D. -Overall, International students take 2½ semesters less than Canadian students to complete their Ph.D. (almost one year less!) Graduation rate at the Ph.D. level: -Overall, graduation rate for International students is lower than Canadian (by 20 points of %) and Permanent resident. -When International students decide to abandon their studies, they did it after 4 semesters instead of 8 semesters for Canadian students! 06/10/ GRADUATE STUDENTS AT POLYTECHNIQUE

25 Le génie en première classe Should we continue to recruit Graduate International Students ? Yes… …but we have to know them better! And to continue to get more data… … but we have to listen what they have to tell us! … but we have to find adequate linguistic, logistic, academic and social integration approaches to offer them an enjoyable and stimulating environment… 06/10/ CONCLUSION
