The Titanic The Titanic started to be built in 1909. Three thousand men laboured for 2 years to complete the largest man made moving object in the world. Each of Titanic's engines were the size of a 3 story house. She weighed 66,000 tons and was equivalent in length to four city blocks. Her height from bridge to keel was equal to a ten story building. She was built in England and set sail from Southampton on April 10 th, 1912 bound for New York.
Who was on board? There were 2,227 people on board and were a mixture of 1 st class, 2 nd class and 3 rd class. The captain’s name was Captain Edward Smith, the crew man who spotted the iceberg was called Fred Fleet. The ship designer’s name was Thomas Andrew.
What happened to the Titanic? The Titanic tried to dodge an iceberg but scraped along the side of it. Fred Fleet warned the bridge that there was an iceberg ahead. He tried to turn as soon as he could but it was too late, the Titanic was going to sink!
When did it happen? The Titanic sunk at 12:18 am April 15 th 1912 It started to sink at 12:05 am April 15 th 1912, that’s just thirteen minutes earlier!
How did it sink? It sank by crashing into an iceberg It faced diagonal going into the water. On it’s way down it all of a sudden broke in half.
How did they get away? The people that got away went off in little life boats. They could fit at least 40 people on each boat. On the first boat they wanted to get away so quickly they only got 12 people on!
