WG1: High Power Targets PASI 2013 Working Group Sessions Introduction Convened by: Dr. C. Densham (STFC/RAL), Mr. P. Hurh (FNAL)

2012 PASI Workshop Report “The working group has identified common goals in high power target systems.” “The leading cross-cutting concerns that emerged from the metric analysis are: furthering our understanding of radiation damage mechanisms, high power density heat transfer and the associated engineering challenges.” “Several notable specialized areas in need of development were identified. These include thermal shock in liquids & solids and damage mechanisms to superconductors in target radiation fields.”

2012 PASI Workshop: 12 Month Deliverables “Form an inter-disciplinary team between STFC, Fermilab and allied institutions to foster long term expertise in understanding the response of materials to radiation damage in the high energy proton regime.” “Participate in conceptual design and review activities of potential facilities” “Design of single pulse tests to explore failure modes for solid target materials at suitable facilities”

Did we deliver? RaDIATE- Radiation Damage In Accelerator Target Environments (FNAL, STFC/RAL, Oxford MFFP, BNL, PNNL NOvA Target Design Optimization and Construction (STFC/RAL) Mu2e Target Conceptual Design, Prototyping and Testing (STFC/RAL) Starting on design/analysis of a high intensity beam pulse test of Be at CERN (HiRadMat)

2012 PASI Workshop: 5 Year Goal “Build a cohesive and coherent target systems team allowing complementarity of facilities and personnel working towards the design of next generation projects.” So focus in this workshop is on capabilities and specific collaborative opportunities

Working Group 1 Charge Review the target facility related capabilities (both existing and near-future) of participating institutions. Identify institutions currently not participating in PASI with capabilities likely to complement the existing PASI target related capabilities. Review ongoing PASI-initiated, target related work with a focus on opportunities for extension of or additional collaborative activities. Review plans for next generation target facilities with a focus on opportunities for new collaborative activities. Identify where collaborative opportunities overlap capabilities. Recommend, and initiate where possible, new or extended collaborative work that benefits current and future target facilities as well as supporting the 5 year goal.

2013 WG 1 Goal Identify and launch specific collaborative activities to start within the next year Expressed as “12-month deliverables” in the closing Working Group Report (Session 6)
