7 7 Middle East Technical University Department of Industrial Engineering Ankara / Turkey Faculty Feedback and Suggestions Work harder –You should not hesitate to undertake hard work –You may have to learn new methods, tools and software packages to get what needs to be done –SD is a major link to industry, let us try not to lose face Teamwork –You do not have to like each other, but you still have to work together as professionals –Be prepared for team meetings –Distribute load equally among team members –Work done and report sections written by individual members of the team need to be connected IE Systems Design

8 8 Middle East Technical University Department of Industrial Engineering Ankara / Turkey Faculty Feedback and Suggestions Analysis of the problem situation –Using IE 398 tools (system elements, boundary and so on) is not sufficient –Connect these to work that follows, use other tools –Draw useful conclusions from your analysis "Haa, demek ki öyle!" Statistical analysis –Describe data needed from the organization in a precise manner and submit written requests –Question and interpret data analysis results –Conduct statistical estimation and hypothesis testing to draw useful conclusions "Acaba öyle mi?” IE Systems Design

9 9 Middle East Technical University Department of Industrial Engineering Ankara / Turkey Faculty Feedback and Suggestions Presentations –Presentation skills are above the average, but... –Technical content should be strengthened with better system and data analysis (more expected in Spring) –More numerical results are needed to support symptoms and problems –Go over your slides with your faculty advisors –Use available time more effectively –Do not talk fast, stick to the main points but support them better –Do not be defensive, make sure you understand the question before answering it –Attend other teams’ presentations IE Systems Design

10 10 Middle East Technical University Department of Industrial Engineering Ankara / Turkey Faculty Feedback and Suggestions Report writing (more on this later) –Check lists in SD Handbook are not section headings –Begin by preparing an outline of sections and subsections, including figures, tables and appendices –Before starting, discuss who is going to write what under which section –Make sure that terminology is consistent throughout the report –Avoid redundant repetitions –Edit and correct on hardcopy before submission –Introduction and problem situation sections are in particular problematic –Do not put all figures and tables in appendices IE Systems Design

12 12 Middle East Technical University Department of Industrial Engineering Ankara / Turkey Project Poster On standard size A1 paper (594mm x 841mm), portrait orientation, in Turkish It will be a display (drawings, schemas, pictures, graphs, tables, demonstrations, short texts, etc.) of the progress you made in your project It should contain –Full project title, team members, sponsoring organization and advisors –Some text or graphics to highlight the essence of the problem –An indication of the goals and potential outcomes –Potential solution approach and its prospective impact IE Systems Design

13 13 Middle East Technical University Department of Industrial Engineering Ankara / Turkey Midsemester Progress Report This report should not exceed 15 of 1.5-spaced pages (excluding appendices) It should contain –Problem definition and formulation –Solution (or design) approach and modeling –Initial findings from solution trials –The extent of meeting the goals –A vision of how the implementation of the solution will be initiated in the sponsoring organization See Appendix B of SD Handbook for the report format IE Systems Design

14 14 Middle East Technical University Department of Industrial Engineering Ankara / Turkey Final Report This report should not exceed 50 of 1.5-spaced pages (excluding appendices) It is comprehensive (covers both semesters) It should be impeccably and professionally prepared It should contain clearly stated arguments, suggestions and comparisons “So what?” questions should have meaningful answers Go over the checklist in SD Handbook See Appendix B for the report format and the title page IE Systems Design

The above report organization is given in a “linear” fashion, but remember that system design is “circular” or iterative by nature Therefore, as you do the actual analysis and design work, you will often have to return to the previous steps and revise the contents of Sections 3-7 accordingly IE Systems Design
