9 WHY?  1999 Mississippi Senate approved the Mississippi Student Achievement Improvement Act  standards for high school graduation shall include student “mastery of minimum academic skills as measured by assessments developed and administered by the State Board of Education.”

10 Overview of the Biology I Test  based on the 2010 Mississippi Science Framework  measures  a student’s knowledge of basic biological concepts  the use of science skills  the application of biology to real-world problem solving and decision making  students will  interpret data  apply concepts  draw conclusions in answering the questions

11 Components of Biology I SATP  test consists of 70 multiple-choice items  may include charts, diagrams, or graphs  questions from the following competencies are distributed throughout the test:  Inquiry  Biochemical Basis of Life  Living Organisms and Their Environment  Biological Organization  Heredity  Diversity and Biological Change

13 Another way Biology I SATP is scored …  Performance Level Descriptors  The No Child Left Behind (NCLB) Act requires that PLDs for at least three levels  minimum, basic, proficient, and advanced  The total description for the PLDs must reflect  cognitive challenge  cognitive complexity  cognitive depth indicated by the depth of knowledge (DOK) level.

24  This test must be passed by the student in order to earn a regular high school diploma.  The components that make up this test (vocabulary, reading, writing, and grammar) are the basis of communication in 11 th and 12 th grade English as well as collegiate level courses.  The score that each student produces becomes a part of our school's QDI or Quality Distribution Index. This number determines the success level and federal funding for our school district.  Our school has a standard and mission to educate each student, creating well rounded individuals, and English II and its curriculum are essential to this.

28  The student will use standard English grammar, mechanics, and sentence structure to communicate.

29  Each student will be having a state test terms test on a weekly basis. These terms will be given to your child to keep. These personal copies can be used at home as a great study tool.  Get in touch with your child's teacher. Open the lines of communication by supporting the focused instruction that he/she gets in class.  Speak to your child with intense URGENCY in relationship to the state test. This test MUST be passed, and it SHOULD be passed on the first try!  Practice tests can be located (with answer keys) on the Mississippi Department of Education website. Print these out and feel free to quiz your child!

30  Encourage your child to read and pay attention to textual information in the world surrounding them like newspapers, magazines, books, etc. Anything that they read can help them.  BE POSITIVE! Tell your child that he/she CAN do this! We have faith! So should you!  Talk to your child about what is going on in the English II classroom. Stay updated on what they know and what they are learning! If you are interested, they will be influenced to be interested, too!

31  The test will be given on Monday, MAY 2 nd ! There is no time limit on this test. The administration of the test will begin around 9am and will continue unimpeded until every student has completed the test at his or her own pace.  Your student will be given a numeric score. 645 is the lowest passing score. 655 is solidly proficient, and should be the score that most of our students receive.

32  Performance levels are described in the following categories: MINIMAL: Student has minimal knowledge of the curriculum and subject material. This is generally considered well below grade level. BASIC: Student has a basic knowledge of the curriculum and subject material. This is still beneath grade level, but most students who perform basic will barely pass the state test. PROFICIENT: Ideally, all of our students should be proficient or above on the state test showing that they have accurate grade level knowledge and perform at an appropriate level in the curriculum. ADVANCED: Student has impressive knowledge of the curriculum and subject material. This student is AWESOME!
