Supplemental Information Lewis Dot Diagrams and Acids & Bases
Lewis Dot Diagrams A symbolic way to represent the number of valence electrons that an atom contains. H Cl
Lewis Dot Diagram – Rules 1.Write the symbol 2.Determine the number of valence electrons 3.Group the first pair of electrons together on the left of the symbol. 4.Spread out the remaining electrons until needing to pair them up.
Lewis Dot Diagrams Examples –Oxygen –Phosphorus –Carbon –Neon
Acids and Bases Based on two very reactive ions H 3 O + –Hydronium ion OH - –Hydroxide ion Relationship with water (H 2 O)
Acids and Bases Acids –A substance with excess hydronium ions Bases –A substance with excess hydroxide ions
pH Scale A measure of the hydronium ion concentration in a solution Acidic NeutralBasic Battery AcidApple JuicePure WaterHand SoapDrain Cleaner
