Barren- having little plant or animal life The moon is completely barren of plant and animal life. This shoreline is often barren because of the fluctuations of the water level of this lake.
Crevasse- deep hole or crack A crevasse stairway in China. A deep crevasse in a glacier.
Deserted- empty; not lived in, or having few or no people A deserted island that I might as well call my own.
Floes- large sheets of floating ice The outer coastal fringe of East Greenland retains ice floes even in late summer. This scene, showing the mountains reflected in the calm waters between floes, is from an area known as Liverpool Land. http://www.swisseduc.ch/glaciers/arctic-islands/arctic-05-en.html?id=5
Grueling- very tiring Marathon des Sables, Ouarzazate, Morocco The Marathon of the Sands takes place over six grueling days, and stretches 156 miles, the equivalent to six regular marathons. The longest single stage is 52 miles long. http://www.time.com/time/photogallery/0,29307,1728844_1562070,00.html#ixzz0jJocuRUS
Impassable- not able to be crossed or traveled through This is as far as the fisherman come. The rocky cliffs in the background are impassible.
Perilous- very dangerous Yea, this might be perilous – a giant, hungry snow snake. Is window washing perilous? How is the pay?
Terrain- land, ground, or earth This map shows the terrain around Hollywood, CA.
