New York became a state on July 26, New York is the 11 th state of the United States. There were a lot of new settlers, so they built the Erie Canal in 1825 for transportation to all over the United States. New York had so many jobs that the people kept coming and coming and the economy grew and grew. In 1929 the Great Depression changed the economy and it got bad, but, during World War II New York bounced back from the Depression because it was a major shipping port for the military.
