3  Mission Statement, HSC To provide persons who are mentally ill or chemically dependent with effective, individualized professional treatment that enables them to achieve their highest level of personal independence in the most therapeutic environment.

4 Jesse P.  Has Down Syndrome.  Classmate of mine—YHS  Works at Fitzgerald Potato Chip Factory, except during a time when his hours were changed…  Functioning in society as well as possible.

5 Tom J. = Chief Bromden-like  Has an elaborate Delusional System.  Absolutely convinced that EROS Data Center controls his movement and mind. Paranoid Schizophrenia UNCHANGEABLE  Is certain that he is a close, personal friend with Sir Paul McCartney, ex-Beatle.  Sees himself on television often.  Has seen “God” at the YMCA; 100 lamps!?  Works at the Human Services Center in an office, shredding confidential documents.  Has a small recycling business.

9 Emil S. = Pete Bancini-like  Swung his fist at my dad, because he was certain my dad was sending him back to his physically violent, abusive father, who was definitely dead. Emil S. had been abused 40 years prior to the instance when he was violent toward my father.  Employed as custodian.  Cerebral Palsy

10 Susan G. (Miss South Dakota)  Was sexually abused as a young girl.  Won “genetic lottery” (beauty, smarts); lost “environmental/family lottery” (dad).  Borderline personality disorder.  Graduate of USD, very intelligent.  Cannot sustain any form of good relationship today; fears abandonment.  Persistent feeling of a major lack (lack of fulfillment) in her life—so stalks/clings.  Constantly “overtests” herself with needles for diabetes—harms herself.

11 John G. = Charlie Cheswick-like  Schizo-affective disorder.  Graduated Sioux Falls College (USF).  Has written many stories, poems, and books—creative & amusing narratives.  Is extremely paranoid; pro at profanity.  Becomes irrationally angry.  Is a germophobe.  Disallowed his books to be sold online—feared spies/invaders. content/uploads/2007/02/germs.jpg

13 Don H.  “Institutionalized” entirely, just like the men in the novel/film. Cheswick, Harding, and others like it better in the hospital, because the hospital is “safer” than society. Has schizophrenia.  “SUPER SENIORS at BVHS” THEORY ? (Buy or Sell this theory of institutionalization?) Schizophrenia = fragmented mind. (like the novel, which is fragmented, too—short sections, sane-insane-sane-insane- sane fragments; “schizophrenically written”)  Electroconvulsive (or shock) therapy (“EST” in the novel)(“EST” in the novel)  Frontal lobotomy—not used any more; made people “calmer” or lethargic or even “zombiefied.”  Marfan’s Syndrome (Abraham Lincoln, too); kicked out of home for being “different” and “deficient.” Invaded McDonald’s trash bins to eat and subsist.Invaded McDonald’s trash bins to eat and subsist.
