1 SEMINAR FOR OIE NATIONAL FOCAL POINTS FOR ANIMAL WELFARE OF THE MIDDLE EAST REGION AMMAN, JORDAN, MARCH 2014 OIE ANIMAL WELFARE STANDARDS BROILER CHICKEN PRODUCTION SYSTEMS MVDr. Rastislav Kolesar International Trade Department

22 Definition Scope Criteria or measurables for the welfare of broilers Recommendations ANIMAL WELFARE & BROILER CHICKEN PRODUCTION SYSTEMS (CHAPTER 7.10)

33 OTHER CHAPTERS OF OIE TERRESTRIAL CODE RELATED TO AW OF BROILERS Transport of animals by land Transport of animals by sea Transport of animals by air The slaughter of animals for human consumption The killing of animals for disease control purposes

44 ANIMAL WELFARE & BROILER CHICKEN PRODUCTION SYSTEMS (CHAPTER 7.10) Definitions (Art ) Chicken Broiler o means a bird of the species Gallus gallus kept for commercial meat production. o Poultry kept in village or backyard flocks are not included. Harvesting o means the catching and loading of birds on farm for transportation to the slaughterhouse/abattoir

55 SCOPE (ART ) from arrival of day old birds on the farm to harvesting the broilers in commercial production systems cover broilers kept in cages, on slatted floors, litter or dirt and indoors or outdoors

66 OUTCOME BASED MEASURES

77 - Mortality, morbidity and culling - Gait - Contact dermatitis - Feather conditions - Incidence of diseases, metabolic disorders and parasitic infestation - Mortality, morbidity and culling - Gait - Contact dermatitis - Feather conditions - Incidence of diseases, metabolic disorders and parasitic infestation Behavior Water and Feed consumption Performance Injury rate Eye condition Vocalization Behavior Water and Feed consumption Performance Injury rate Eye condition Vocalization CRITERIA FOR THE WELFARE OF BROILERS (ART )

8 GAIT AND LAMENESS

9 CONTACT DERMATITIS

10 CONTACT DERMATITIS

11 BREAST BLISTERS

12 FEATHER CONDITIONS

13 STOCKING DENSITIS AND CONTACT DERMATITIS

14 INCIDENCE OF DISEASE - ASCITES The term "ascites" refers to the fluid accumulation in abdominal cavity or in chest area. The disease is more scientifically known as pulmonary hypertension syndrome. Diagnosed at weeks of age. Total mortality due to ascites is higher in the male parent lines, which have the capability of faster growth

15 ENVIRONMENT AND MANAGEMENT a.Thermal environment b.Lighting c.Air quality f.Flooring, bedding, resting surfaces and litter quality g.Stocking density h.Outdoor areas j.Protection from predators

16 LIGHT REGIME

17 LIGHT MANGEMENT Continuous light produce low level of activity in broiler flocks throughout the day; the flock does not develop a circadian activity pattern Alternating Light-Dark-Rhythms lead to increased activity in the light phases but do not increase the total activity

18 LIGHT MANAGMENT Gain of increased light regime - 25 grams / per bird or 1% % of weight Culls in different light regime - 1,6 % increase in culled birds

19 LITTER QUALITY

20 STOCKING DENSITIS AND CONTACT DERMATITIS / LITTER QUALITY

21 Stocking density

22 WELFARE QUALITY ASSESSMENT

23 Thank you for your attention!
