International Telecommunication Union Workshop on Next Generation Networks: What, When & How? Geneva, 9-10 July 2003 Workshop objectives and programme Brian Moore Lucent Technologies Chairman of ITU-T Study Group 13

ITU-T July 2003 Workshop on Next Generation Networks: What, When & How? Objectives of the workshop (1) o Understand the service and technology drivers for NGN. o Explore the emerging new generation service challenges. o Compare fixed and mobile network approaches to NGN.

ITU-T July 2003 Workshop on Next Generation Networks: What, When & How? Objectives of the workshop (2) o Examine how NGN and the Internet are complementary. o Discuss how NGN will help fixed and mobile services converge. o Identify key standards needed and discuss how standards gaps can be filled.

ITU-T July 2003 Workshop on Next Generation Networks: What, When & How? Workshop programme (Day 1) o Opening o Session 1: Keynote addresses o Session 2: New Generation service challenges o Session 3: Fixed users and the NGN o Session 4: Mobile users and the NGN o Panel discussion

ITU-T July 2003 Workshop on Next Generation Networks: What, When & How? Workshop programme (Day 2) o Session 5: NGN and Internet: redundant or complementary? o Session 6: Fixed-mobile convergence: will NGN help ? o Session 7: NGN oriented solutions and plans o Session 8: Which standards are needed or missing? o Panel discussion, conclusions and closing

ITU-T July 2003 Workshop on Next Generation Networks: What, When & How? NGN-2004 Project (1) o The aim is to include all ITU-T activities on NGN related standardisation o Target date for first set of Recommendations on NGN is mid-2004 (end of study period) o Work is underway on a common definition of NGN including the fundamental characteristics and capabilities

ITU-T July 2003 Workshop on Next Generation Networks: What, When & How? NGN-2004 Project (2) Seven study areas have been identified in the Project o General framework models for the NGN o Functional architecture models for the NGN o End to end Quality of Service o Service platforms (APIs) o Network management o Security o Generalised mobility

ITU-T July 2003 Workshop on Next Generation Networks: What, When & How? NGN-2004 Project (3) Next steps o The project description will be revised to take account of the outcome of the workshop (at a project management meeting on 11July) o Study Group 13, at its meeting 21 July to 1 August will further work on the project and will issue an update (http://www.itu.int/ITU-T/studygroups /com13/ngn2004/index.html)
