1st ICT Clustering Panel Discussion: Cross border networking & clustering in Centrope Martin Sperka, Faculty of Informatics, UNINOVA BVŠP Slovak, Bratislava Technology Transfer Conference in Centrope Vienna, March 16, 2010

Faculty of Informatics UNINOVA BVSP(Bratislava University of Law) First private FI in Slovakia, exists 1,5 years UNINOVA has 4 faculties – Law (6 years exists), Economy, Media, Informatics Many foreign teachers: CZ, AT, D, RU,.. Center for knowledge transfer and Center of Creative Economy – under construction (ICT a big part of the project) – goal platform for reserach and networking in the field of creative economy Technology Transfer Conference in Centrope Vienna, March 16, 2010

Statement: In the period before the World War II, Central Europe belonged to the most advanced scientific, technological, philosophical, artistic and cultural regions in the world. Immediately before and after the end of war, many distinguished personalities moved to the USA and other parts of the world. The iron curtain, which divided the world into two parts, divided also the region which traditionally was the same territory. Technology Transfer Conference in Centrope Vienna, March 16, 2010

After this curtain disappeared arose a hope for mutual cooperation in the Central Europe. But this process was not so fast as expected Big potential of intellectual capital and infrastructure of the territory with cities like Vienna, Bratislava, Brno, Gyor, Sopron and more distant Prague, Budapest, Graz and Maribor is not fully exploited. Technology Transfer Conference in Centrope Vienna, March 16, 2010

There exists a very limited number of common projects in the field of ITC applications among universities in the above mentioned cities. Big ICT companies have their own networks in the frames of their global structures. Close cooperation existed between Siemens in Vienna and Bratislava. Technology Transfer Conference in Centrope Vienna, March 16, 2010

There was a big initiative to create a sort of a Silicon Valley (Euro Valley) in Western Slovakia. There was an initiative of one Austrian company and some people in Bratislava to create technological park in the campus of Slovak University of Technology in Mlynská dolina, near to the highway to Vienna, Prague and Budapest. Unfortunatelly this project had a small support. Technology Transfer Conference in Centrope Vienna, March 16, 2010

Automotive and electronic industry in Slovakia – Korean, Japanese, German and French companies created many working places but the intellectual potential in Slovakia (for example in car electronics where software engineers and other computer specialists are demanded) is not used in this process. Technology Transfer Conference in Centrope Vienna, March 16, 2010

I tried to apply for an Erasmus Mundus project (common study program of 3 EU countries with the possibility to finance non EU master degree students), multiple diploma study program between STU in Bratislava, TU Vienna, TU Budapest and Prague, but both projects had very little support at my home university at that time. Technology Transfer Conference in Centrope Vienna, March 16, 2010

Finally several success stories - projects in the ITC and related fields (which I know about or I personally participated): CESCG – Central European Seminar on Computer Graphics in a beautiful castle in Budmerice, Western Slovakia. This annual event started as a bilateral seminar of Comenius University in Bratislava and TU Vienna in Later joined TU Budapest, then Prague, Graz and Maribor. This year it will be 14th anniversary. Technology Transfer Conference in Centrope Vienna, March 16, 2010

In the years there were several workshops on New Media Art (laser art with a very sophisticated computer controlled laser, multimedia, computer animation and virtual reality, digital photography) in the Topolcianky castle (Slovakia) organized by the Austrian – Slovak association KulturAXE from Vienna. There were participants from the schools of arts from Austria, Slovakia, Ukraine, Russia, Switzerland and Germany and speakers mostly from Austria and Slovakia. Technology Transfer Conference in Centrope Vienna, March 16, 2010

EUROPRIX Multimedia – the festival and contest of the best electronic content in Europe. Started in Salzburg (not directly in Centropa) during Austrian EU presidency. Countries like Czech republic, Hungary, Slovenia and Slovakia actively contributed to this contest since the beginning. Now it is a big event and expanded to MM World Summit.
