Who Am I? Now then, please swear to me by the LORD that you will show kindness to my family, because I have shown kindness to you. Give me a sure sign that you will spare the lives of my father and mother, my brothers and sisters, and all who belong to them, and that you will save us from death." "Our lives for your lives!" the men assured her. "If you don't tell what we are doing, we will treat you kindly and faithfully when the LORD gives us the land." Scripture Reading

Who Am I?

I lived in Jericho. I was referred to as a prostitute. I was fearful for my life. I made a verbal treaty with Israel. I was saved during the invasion. I am in the Hall of Faith. I am an example of faith in action. I am in the lineage of Jesus.

You Know My Name In English: Rahab In Hebrew: Rachav Meaning: “wide” “roomy” “at liberty”

Joshua 2.1, 3 I lived in Jericho. 1 Then Joshua son of Nun secretly sent two spies from Shittim. "Go, look over the land," he said, "especially Jericho." So they went and entered the house of a prostitute named Rahab and stayed there. 3 So the king of Jericho sent this message to Rahab: "Bring out the men who came to you and entered your house, because they have come to spy out the whole land." Joshua 2, mc 2.1-24, 2.1, 3

Joshua 2.1 I was referred to as a prostitute. 1 Then Joshua son of Nun secretly sent two spies from Shittim. "Go, look over the land," he said, "especially Jericho." So they went and entered the house of a prostitute [a] named Rahab and stayed there. NIV Footnote [a] possibly “an innkeeper” KJV Joshua 6.22 Strong’s Numbers H802, H2181 provides insight Strong’s says H802 is a feminine adulter Strong’s says H2181 has a figurative meaning “to commit idolatry” Joshua 2, mc 2.1-24, 2.1

Joshua 2.13 I was fearful for my life. 13 that you will spare the lives of my father and mother, my brothers and sisters, and all who belong to them, and that you will save us from death." Joshua 2, mc 2.1-24, 2.13

Joshua 2.12-14 I made a verbal treaty with Israel. 12 Now then, please swear to me by the LORD that you will show kindness to my family, because I have shown kindness to you. Give me a sure sign 13 that you will spare the lives of my father and mother, my brothers and sisters, and all who belong to them, and that you will save us from death." 14 "Our lives for your lives!" the men assured her. "If you don't tell what we are doing, we will treat you kindly and faithfully when the LORD gives us the land." Joshua 2, mc 2.1-24, 2.12-14

Joshua 2.17-21 I made a verbal treaty with Israel. 17 The men said to her, "This oath you made us swear will not be binding on us 18 unless, when we enter the land, you have tied this scarlet cord in the window through which you let us down, and unless you have brought your father and mother, your brothers and all your family into your house. 19 If anyone goes outside your house into the street, his blood will be on his own head; we will not be responsible. As for anyone who is in the house with you, his blood will be on our head if a hand is laid on him. 20 But if you tell what we are doing, we will be released from the oath you made us swear." 21 "Agreed," she replied. "Let it be as you say." So she sent them away and they departed. And she tied the scarlet cord in the window. Joshua 2, mc 2.1-24, 2.17-21

Joshua 6.22-23, 25 I was saved during the invasion. 22 Joshua said to the two men who had spied out the land, "Go into the prostitute's house and bring her out and all who belong to her, in accordance with your oath to her." 23 So the young men who had done the spying went in and brought out Rahab, her father and mother and brothers and all who belonged to her. They brought out her entire family and put them in a place outside the camp of Israel. 25 But Joshua spared Rahab the prostitute, with her family and all who belonged to her, because she hid the men Joshua had sent as spies to Jericho—and she lives among the Israelites to this day. Joshua 6, mc 6.1-27, 6.22-23, 25

Hebrews 11.31 I am in the Hall of Faith. 31 By faith the prostitute Rahab, because she welcomed the spies, was not killed with those who were disobedient. [a] NIV Footnote [a] or unbelieving Hebrews 11, mc 11.1-12.2, 11.31

James 2.25-26 I am an example of faith in action. 25 In the same way, was not even Rahab the prostitute considered righteous for what she did when she gave lodging to the spies and sent them off in a different direction? 26 As the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without deeds is dead. James 2, mc 2.8-26, 2.25-26

Matthew 1.5 I am in the lineage of Jesus. 5 Salmon the father of Boaz, whose mother was Rahab, Boaz the father of Obed, whose mother was Ruth, Obed the father of Jesse, 6 and Jesse the father of King David. David was the father of Solomon, whose mother had been Uriah's wife, Matthew 1, mc 1.1-17, 1.5-6

Endnotes Lesson: Who Am I?I’m Rahab. Presented: February 28, 2010 Author: Raymond Harriswww.raymondharris.com All Scripture Quotations, unless otherwise indicated, are taken from The Holy Bible, New International Version; used from www.biblegateway.com. Rahab’s (H7343) name means “Wide” Brown-Driver-Briggs Hebrew Definitions, e-Sword version 8.0.6. Rahab (H7343) means “proud” and is derived from H7342 meaning “literally or figuratively roomy, broad, large, at liberty, proud, wide” Strong’s Hebrew Definitions, e-Sword version 8.0.6. Harlot, in Joshua 6.22 Strong’s provides two Hebrew Numbers with the English word harlot; H802 for a feminine adulter; and H2181 that also has a figurative meaning “to commit idolatry”; taken together this may mean that she is not a prostitute as traditional understanding seems to have labeled her, but an idol worshipper; therefore she is an spiritual adulterer because she is not worshipping the true God of Israel (that being YHWH). This may simply mean that Rahab was a feminine idolater, as in a feminine false worshipper.
