1 ACTION FOR WEST AFRICA REGION REPRODUCTIVE HEALTH AND CHILD SURVIVAL PROJECT AWARE-RH is a USAID-funded project implemented by EngenderHealth (Managing Partner) in partnership with Abt Associates, AED, and MSH

2 15 ECOWAS member countries and Cameroon, Chad, and Mauritania with little regional cohesion in terms of population size, governance, economic systems, language, and policies Common issues including poor health, high illiteracy, low status of women, economic uncertainly, limited opportunities, and civil and political strife Background and Challenges

3 Violent conflicts resulting in massive movements of people within the region Low donor support and lack of coordination of donor support Poor use of existing resources Background and Challenges

4 Previous WARP project (FHA or SFPS) –Focused on 4 countries (Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Cote D’Ivoire, and Togo from 1995 to 2003) –Build on the past and look to the future Current project regional in focus Background and Challenges

5 Strong, capable, relevant, vibrant, and sustainable West African Regional Technical Leadership Institutions and Networks proactively assisting national and cross-border health programs in developing quality health services that meet the needs of their populations Vision

6 Use regional consultative processes to ensure regional ownership of best practices and approaches Facilitate the creation of diverse partnerships to implement activities, exchange technical information, and leverage resources Apply systematic knowledge management approaches to identify, disseminate, and apply best practices that can be adapted and replicated throughout the region Foster technical leadership, marketing, and business development capacity among RTLIs Strategic Approach

7 Goal 1. Improved approaches to FP/RH and CS services disseminated region-wide Goal 2. Increased regional stakeholder advocacy for policy change Goal 3. Increased capacity of regional institutions and networks Goal 4. Health sector reform models developed and disseminated region-wide Project Goals

8  Selected Outcomes –Best practices in FP/RH, CS identified and disseminated region-wide –Innovative training and quality assurance tools adopted, replicated, and used –Demonstration or model innovative service delivery approaches established and replicated –VCT and STI cross boarded programs offering FP information and services –Access to FP/RH, CS services for marginalized immigrant groups expanded Goal 1

9  Selected Outcomes –FP/RH and CS items are high on the regional agenda –Regional and national advocacy plans development and/or updated –Advocacy and communication skills in regional institutions strengthened Goal 2 (1)

10  Selected Outcomes –Capacity of regional institutions to monitor implementation of international agreements and to conduct annual review of funding commitments strengthened –Number of countries implementing and monitoring international agreements increased Goal 2 (2)

11  Selected Outcomes –Regional resource centers are recognized as effective leaders in providing high quality technical assistance –Regional resource centers use common framework and approaches for providing technical assistance –Updated curricula and training technologies are used at selected training institutions Goal 3 (1)

12  Selected Outcomes –Strengthen capacity of WAHO to effectively manage, coordinate, and facilitate implementation of selected activities –CERPOD has a sound fiscal base, skilled human resources, and effective management –Consultant database updated –A cadre of young health professionals with language, information technology, and leadership skills is working in the region Goal 3 (2)

13  Selected Outcomes –Regional commodity security plan developed and disseminated –Increased donor coordination and funding commitments for FP/RH, and CS –Funds allocated to FP/RH, and CS commodities in health budgets –Mutuelle models adapted, tested, and disseminated –Capacity in NHA build at regional level –Improved institutional proposal development skills Goal 4
