HERE ARE 5 THINGS YOU SHOULD THINK ABOUT FIRST. So, You Want to Run a Marathon.
#1 There is nothing like finishing your first marathon. It's virgin territory. You will only do it for the first time once, so doing it right is a key to success. With the University of Calgary program, you are in good hands. We offer a very supportive environment for newcomers to distance running as well as for those with more experience.
#2 Marathon training is both a selfish endeavour and a team sport - getting your spouse, family, social circle "on board" is important. You will need them. Your supporters need to understand that you have a goal, and it doesn't necessarily include them all of the time (but they will enjoy the trip to your marathon destination all the same ).
#3 The glory of the finish line is 8 months away. Wanting to finish a marathon requires that you do all of the homework. It requires training, dedication, sacrifice and a little sweat. Crossing the finish line is the easy part. Let us guide you.
#4 Be prepared. Get a physical examination to be sure you are healthy enough to take on this challenge. Get a well-fitting pair of shoes. Open your mind to all of the possibilities that you will encounter. Arrive on the first night with at least 3 months of 30 minutes, 3x per week running base. If you already do other physical activities and strength training, even better.
#5 Choose to run for the right reasons. If you are doing this for someone else, it may be a tough road. Running a marathon is a very personal accomplishment and one you will never forget. Let us show you the way.
