Scriptural proof that Water Baptism was invariably administered in the Early Church by saying the name of Jesus over the person being baptized as well as Scriptural reasons why this was necessary Apostolic Faith Tabernacle Bristol, TN

The Power of Saying THE NAME Numbers 6 22 And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying, 23 Speak unto Aaron and unto his sons, saying, On this wise ye shall bless the children of Israel, saying unto them, 24 The LORD bless thee, and keep thee: 25 The LORD make his face shine upon thee, and be gracious unto thee: 26 The LORD lift up his countenance upon thee, and give thee peace. 27 And they shall put my name upon the children of Israel, and I will bless them. It was the priests' job in the OT to invoke the sacred OT Covenant Name of God (YHWH) upon the congregation so the Lord would bless them. In the NT, the preachers' job is to invoke the NT Covenant Name “above every name” -- JESUS (YHWH our Savior) -- upon each believer so the Lord will bless them. This process begins in water baptism and continues through preaching and prayer. Apostolic Faith Tabernacle Bristol, TN

Prophetic Precursor to Pentecost Joel 2 32 And it shall come to pass, that whosoever shall call on the name of the LORD shall be delivered: for in mount Zion and in Jerusalem shall be deliverance, as the LORD hath said, and in the remnant whom the LORD shall call. This keystone prophecy was quoted by Peter in Acts 2:21 on the day of Pentecost while preaching to unconverted Jews, ultimately building up to the NT Plan of Salvation cornerstone statement given in Acts 2:38, where water baptism in the Name of Jesus Christ is clearly mandated. It was quoted again by Paul in Romans 10:13 as he confirms the plan given by Peter in Acts 2:38 to the Roman believers by equating “believing the preaching” with “obeying the gospel.” Apostolic Faith Tabernacle Bristol, TN

Naming the new baby… Notice: the naming of Hebrew male children occurred on the 8 th day of life at the time of circumcision. Luke 1 59 … on the eighth day they came to circumcise the child; and they called him Zacharias…. Luke 2 21 And when eight days were accomplished for the circumcising of the child, his name was called Jesus…. Colossians 2 9 For in him [Christ] dwelleth all the fulness of the Godhead bodily. 10 And ye are complete in him, which is the head of all principality and power: 11 In whom also ye are circumcised with the circumcision made without hands, in putting off the body of the sins of the flesh by the circumcision of Christ: 12 Buried with him in baptism…. When Jesus was circumcised, he was officially "named" Jesus by his parents. When we are baptized, we are made partakers of the circumcision of Christ if and only if the name of Jesus is proclaimed as a means of validating or giving divine sanction to the ceremony. 5 The Gentiles, upon whom my name is called Acts 15 16 After this I will return, and will build again the tabernacle of David, which is fallen down; and I will build again the ruins thereof, and I will set it up: 17 That the residue of men might seek after the Lord, and all the Gentiles, upon whom my name is called, saith the Lord, who doeth all these things. Notice: the literal rendering of the phrase "my people, who are called by my name" in 2 Chronicles 7:14 is "my people, upon whom my name is called". It is clear that God’s people are to be identified by the fact that His Name is called upon them! Acts 22 16 … be baptized, and wash away thy sins, calling on the name of the Lord. James 2 (Young’s Literal Translation) 7 do they not themselves speak evil of the good name that was called upon you? KJV "that worthy name by the which ye are called" Amplified "that precious name by which you are distinguished and called [the name of Christ invoked in baptism]" Apostolic Faith Tabernacle Bristol, TN

Conclusions…. In the OT, God’s Covenant People were called by His name YHWH, or more precisely, His name was called upon them. In the NT, the same principle holds true. The NT Covenant Name of God is JESUS, a compound name formed from the OT Covenant Name YHWH and the word for Salvation. To be officially joined in a covenant relationship with God, believers in the NT MUST have the name of JESUS pronounced over them in Water Baptism. Apostolic Faith Tabernacle Bristol, TN

What saith the scripture? All believers in the NT were baptized in the name of Jesus Christ, i.e., the name of Jesus was pronounced over them when they were baptized. Acts 2:38-41 Acts 8:12-17 Acts 8:35-38 Acts 9:18, 22:16 Acts 10:47-48 Acts 19:3-5 Romans 6:3-4 1 Corinthians 1:13-15 Galatians 3:27 James 2:7 Apostolic Faith Tabernacle Bristol, TN

Acts 2:38-41 38 Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. 39 For the promise is unto you, and to your children, and to all that are afar off, even as many as the L ORD our God shall call. 40 And with many other words did he testify and exhort, saying, Save yourselves from this untoward generation. 41 Then they that gladly received his word were baptized: and the same day there were added unto them about three thousand souls. 9 Acts 8:12-16 12 But when they believed Philip preaching the things concerning the kingdom of God, and the name of Jesus Christ, they were baptized, both men and women. 13 Then Simon himself believed also: and when he was baptized, he continued with Philip, and wondered, beholding the miracles and signs which were done. 14 Now when the apostles which were at Jerusalem heard that Samaria had received the word of God, they sent unto them Peter and John: 15 Who, when they were come down, prayed for them, that they might receive the Holy Ghost: 16 (For as yet he was fallen upon none of them: only they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.) 17 Then laid they their hands on them, and they received the Holy Ghost. 10 Acts 8:35-38 35 Then Philip opened his mouth, and began at the same scripture, and preached unto him Jesus. 36 And as they went on their way, they came unto a certain water: and the eunuch said, See, here is water; what doth hinder me to be baptized? 37 And Philip said, If thou believest with all thine heart, thou mayest. And he answered and said, I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God. 38 And he commanded the chariot to stand still: and they went down both into the water, both Philip and the eunuch; and he baptized him. 11 Acts 22:16 16 And now why tarriest thou? arise, and be baptized, and wash away thy sins, calling on the name of the Lord. Original context Acts 9:18 18 And immediately there fell from his eyes as it had been scales: and he received sight forthwith, and arose, and was baptized. Apostolic Faith Tabernacle Bristol, TN

Acts 10:47-48 47 Can any man forbid water, that these should not be baptized, which have received the Holy Ghost as well as we? 48 And he commanded them to be baptized in the name of the Lord [ESV Jesus Christ]. Apostolic Faith Tabernacle Bristol, TN

Acts 19:3-5 3 And he said unto them, Unto what then were ye baptized? And they said, Unto John's baptism. 4 Then said Paul, John verily baptized with the baptism of repentance, saying unto the people, that they should believe on him which should come after him, that is, on Christ Jesus. 5 When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. Apostolic Faith Tabernacle Bristol, TN

Romans 6:3-4 3 Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death? 4 Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: … Apostolic Faith Tabernacle Bristol, TN

1 Corinthians 1:13-15 13 Is Christ divided? was Paul crucified for you? or were ye baptized in the name of Paul? 14 I thank God that I baptized none of you, but Crispus and Gaius; 15 Lest any should say that I had baptized in mine own name. Apostolic Faith Tabernacle Bristol, TN

Galatians 3:27 27 For as many of you as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ. Apostolic Faith Tabernacle Bristol, TN

James 2:7 KJV 7 Do not they blaspheme that worthy name by the which ye are called? Amplified 7 Is it not they who slander and blaspheme that precious name by which you are distinguished and called [the name of Christ invoked in baptism]? Apostolic Faith Tabernacle Bristol, TN
