2 Program Overview This program offers participants training in how to cope and respond effectively to individuals who are acutely angry and/or are escalating their anger, resistance or hostility to potentially, act out violently. Participants will: Achieve enhanced understanding of self-awareness; learn how personal history affects a crisis situation, and its relevance on the outcome of the crisis; Learn effective defusing, de-escalation and disengaging strategies when responding to hostile individuals in conflict or crisis situations; Review active listening, assertive communication and limit setting strategies in conflict situations; Practice verbal, non-verbal and para-verbal interventions that are designed to deescalate individuals at various stages of arousal; Study strategies for effectively managing stress in work settings which experience both acute and chronic crisis situations. DEFUSING ANGER, RESISTANCE & HOSTILITY TRAINING One and Two Day Programs

3 PHYSICAL SELF-PROTECTION SKILLS PROGRAM GOALS Increase awareness of personal assets and challenges when responding to violent behaviours in the workplace Enhance a personal sense of confidence and competency when having to protect one’s self from assaultive individuals Practice an array self-protection tactics to support your safety when engaging high-risk clients. This intensive 1-day program is designed for crisis responders and staff working in the social service and criminal justice fields who potentially encounter violence and assaultive behaviour with the clients they work with. Come prepared for a physically challenging but enjoyable day! NOTE: This is an advanced program – hence, participants need to have at least one day of training in crisis intervention and verbal defusing skills before they can attend this program. This intensive 1-day program is designed for crisis responders and staff working in the social service and criminal justice fields who potentially encounter violence and assaultive behaviour with the clients they work with. We will review the theoretical principles of Self Protection as we practice how these principles are put into practical application to defend against a great variety of physical attacks. Attacks that will be addressed will be pushing / punching / club attacks; arm grabs; choking attacks with the attacker in front of you and behind you; hair grabs; body holds; being pinned against a wall; escaping from being held on the ground with your attacker on top of you COURSE DESCRIPTION

4 Overview This program focuses on enhancing the skills and self-awareness of staff to effectively defuse angry, hostile and aggressive individuals. This program is designed for the experienced crisis intervene as an opportunity to re-visit and practice skills already acquired in past training while on the job. Unlike the one-day program, there will be limited emphasis on program planning and assessment, and more on personal, interpersonal and team intervention skills. The need for post crisis debriefing and the impact of traumatic stress will also be addressed. Course Outline Development of enhanced self-awareness in dealing with angry, hostile and aggressive individuals  Crisis escalation spiral guided with an understanding of effective de-escalation strategies depending on the level of escalation  Non-verbal and para-verbal communication in conflict  A review of active listening, assertive communication and limit setting strategies  Team roles, responsibilities and co-ordination during crisis with opportunities to simulate actual crisis situations  Post-crisis debriefing of staff and consumers, the impact of traumatic stress and critical incident stress management CRISIS INTERVENTION WITH THE HOSTILE AND AGGRESSIVE INDIVIDUAL TWO DAY TRAINING PROGRAM OUTLINE

5 COMMUNITY WORKER SAFETY STRATEGIES HALF DAY, ONE DAY AND TWO DAY PROGRAMS Program Overview This program will introduce participants to practical safety strategies designed to maximize personal safety and minimize risk when working in unfamiliar or potentially dangerous community environments. Participants will: Increase self-awareness regarding unsafe situations; Develop practical strategies to minimize risk and maximize personal safety; Increase personal confidence when working alone; Identify their individual physical, psychological, and emotional resources; Identify their agency’s strengths, gaps, and resources through the completion of a variety of safety inventories; Learn to assess the risk and opportunities of any neighbourhood or community setting;

6 O N E D A Y P R O G R A M ADVANCED STRATEGIES IN MOTIVATIONAL INTERVIEWING Program Overview This practical, interactive and dynamic workshop is for individuals who already possess advanced knowledge and experience in motivational interviewing. It is an advanced offering designed to help anchor previously learned strategies. Participants will: Learn to incorporate the tools of motivational interviewing into brief counselling interactions; Gain understanding of the key roadblocks to motivation; Practice skills in the art of strategic reflection Enhance their skills in working with "resistant" clients; Develop techniques in negotiating a change plan with their clients. 7 Program Overview Compassion Fatigue, Secondary Trauma, Vicarious Trauma are used interchangeably in the helping profession. Due to funding crunches, lack of time and difficulties seeing that helpers also need support, unwritten rules in the form of organizational culture perpetuates an expectation of “move on” and continue to work. This course will allow participants to see that there are other options. Participants will: Discuss the “occupational hazards” in helping professions; Learn, discuss and differentiate between the key concepts of trauma: Primary and Secondary Trauma, Compassion Fatigue, Vicarious Trauma, Burnout; Explore the potential emotional, physical and relational effects of secondary trauma; Learn about post-traumatic growth/vicarious resilience; Discuss strategies for managing secondary trauma; Examine organizational approaches and supports put in place to ensure worker safety and self-care; Understand the benefits of creating a workplace "recovery VICARIOUS TRAUMA, COMPASSION FATIGUE AND SECONDARY WOUNDING ONE AND TWO DAY PROGRAMS

8 T E A M B U I L D I N G O N E D A Y P R O G R A M Introduction: This one day program has been designed to provide participants with an overview of the concept of teams, the conditions required to support a teaming environment, the issues which emerge in working with teams and the leadership required to support and sustain high performing teams. As such, this program will be of interest to Board Members, Executive Directors, team leaders and individuals who are interested in exploring a process which values diversity, empowers its workforce and promotes individual and group responsibility in meeting the challenges of a rapidly changing and turbulent environment. Our goals for the day include utilizing an experiential process supported by a participant manual to explore, experience and analyze the conditions which are required in achieving high performance through a team based environment.
