Environmental Focus Oil Spills By Kiley Dindinger and Maddie Lomme
The Facts The BP oil spill started on April 20, 2010 The animals under threat are Bottlenose Dolphins, Bluefin Tuna, Shellfish, Sperm Whales, and Brown Pelicans were put endangered because of the BP oil spill Oil spills are some of the biggest disasters because they ruin marine life and waste oil
5 species of Sea turtles live in the Gulf of Mexico, and now 4 of them are endangered. The 5 th species of turtles (loggerhead) is threatened. The oil spill puts these turtles even more at risk of dying out.
When the BP oil leak on the Gulf of Mexico first occurred, it was estimated that roughly 1,000 barrels of crude oil were leaking into the ocean per day. The estimate rose and soon became 5,000 barrels a day. That is roughly 210,000 gallons per day.
Oil spills have serious effects on marine life. Billions of animals were killed in 2010 by the BP oil spill. This kind of accident should not happen because it can ruin the ocean’s ecosystem.
