The Salesforce.com Certified Force.com Developer exam is for individuals who want to demonstrate their knowledge, skills, and abilities building custom applications and analytics using the declarative capabilities of the Force.com platform. Here are examples of the concepts you should understand to pass the exam:
Build custom applications using the point-and-click capabilities of the platform
Design the data model, user interface, business logic, and security for custom applications
Design reports, dashboards, and portals

Registration fee is USD 200

7. Force.com DEV 401 and 501 DEV 501 Requirements:
The Salesforce.com Certified Force.com Advanced Developer credential encompasses the programmatic capabilities of the Force.com platform, including Force.com code and Force.com pages. To earn this credential, a candidate must successfully complete three activities:
1. The Salesforce.com Certified Force.com Advanced Developer exam: A multiple-choice/multiple-select proctored exam. This portion of the credential program must be passed successfully to move on to the next portion: the programming assignment.
2. The Advanced Developer programming assignment: At scheduled times throughout the year, certification candidates who have passed the Salesforce.com Certified Force.com Advanced Developer exam will be given the opportunity to complete the second portion of the credential program: the programming assignment. A set of requirements and development parameters will be sent to the candidate, and the candidate will have a fixed amount of time to complete and submit the assignment. The candidate will be given the evaluation criteria and detailed instructions on how to complete and submit the final working application. The programming assignment is completed at the candidate’s own pace and doesn’t require working at a proctored site. However, there will be a deadline for assignment completion.
3. The Advanced Developer essay exam: Upon submission of the programming assignment, the candidate will be required to complete a short-answer proctored exam that covers the specifics of the programming assignment. The candidate will need to go to a testing center and complete the essay exam. The essay exam, in combination with the programming assignment, will be evaluated and scored as the final portion of the Salesforce.com Certified Force.com Advanced Developer certification program.

8. Multiple-choice Exam: Programming Assignment
Force.com DEV 401 and 501
DEV 501 Exam:
The Salesforce.com Certified Force.com Advanced Developer credential has three steps: (1) multiple-choice exam, (2) programming assignment, and (3) essay exam. To earn the Salesforce.com Certified Force.com Advanced Developer credential, you must successfully complete all three components in this order. Completion of each component is required to move on to the next step.
Multiple-choice Exam:
69 multiple-choice questions
120 minutes allotted to complete the exam
73% is the passing score
Registration fee is USD 400
No hard-copy or online materials may be referenced during the exam
Current status as a Salesforce.com Certified Force.com Developer is a prerequisite
Recommend taking Apex and Visualforce Controllers (DEV501)

Programming Assignment
Development of the programmatic components of an application using Apex and Visualforce against a set of business requirements in a pre-configured Salesforce organization
1 month allotted to complete the programming assignment on your own time; Plan for a minimum of 20 hours within the allotted window to complete the assignment
Submission of the programming assignment for evaluation by a team of experts
Successful completion of the Certified Force.com Advanced Developer exam is a prerequisite
Essay Exam:
3–5 short-answer essay questions related to the programming assignment you submit
60 minutes allotted to complete the exam in a proctored environment
